New for this week I have some additional freight cars for my series of models to pay tribute to Jim Hediger's OHIO SOUTHERN layout. I previously posted pictures of my version of an OHIO SOUTHERN boxcar. This week, I am adding a set of cars for the HURON STEEL manufacturing plant.

The set of cars consists of two idler flatcars and a drop end gondola car. The gondola is carrying and oversized steel beam.
The idler flats are resin kits from Schluykill Models that are made by Funaro and Camerlengo. The "I-Beam" deck came with the kit. These models are a wonderful representation of a heavy duty flatcar. The gondola is a Proto-2000 model. All were painted with Scalecote 2 paints and lettered with custom decals made by Donald Manlick. All of the freight cars ride on Kadee "HGC" 70 ton trucks.
I did not detail the tie-downs for the beam yet. I am planning to use a longer beam for the load. This beam came with the gondola kit, and does not seam long enough to me. I think a beam about twenty feet longer would look better.

Thanks for opening up Kevin, and some very nice models, I agree I think the beam needs to be longer also, just did not look right. It would fit in a 65' gon easily.
I managed to get a couple of cars done this week!
First is an Atlas ACF 3560CF Covered Hopper Car, removed the cast on roofwalk and crossover platform and replaced with Plano Model parts. Painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray and lettered with Herald King Decals. The DMIR used these cars to deliver Bentonite to the mines in order to make the Taconite Pellots that were delivered to the steel mills. As the steel industry waned, the cars were sold to the Detroit and Mackinac Railroad.
Next a Walthers NACC 50' RBL, removed the cast on sill steps and replaced them with A-Line Sill steps and added grab next to the door and over the walkover platform. Painted with Scalecoat II Aluminum and Reefer Yellow and lettered with Mask Island Decals. Cars were assigned to the Pillsbury Mill in Bufallo NY and delived the bagged flour throughout the US.
An Athearn SP SD45T-2 and SD45 with elephant ears hauling a mixed freight at the Stongsville Model Railroad Club layout.

Kevin .... Thanks for starting this thread. Your flat car models with I-beam are impressive.
Rick ... I like the covered hopper. The DMIR arrowhead logo is a classic. The D&H RBL car looks great. The SP EMD's are nice looking.

Rick: I love the DM&IR hopper. That is a great lettering scheme. The arrowhead is really a stand-out.

I am in Orlando at the Disney Springs Hilton with my wife for the weekend. We are going to see Bowling For Soup perform at the House Of Blues in Disney Springs tonight, then into the theme parks tomorrow.

George: We just got back to the hotel. You can bet I did ride the trains. The Disney trains are actually live steam narrow gauge and quite nice.

This has been a slow weekend for Weekend Photo Fun. But... the weekend is not over, so I hope to see more people contributing.
