This week I have a new gondola car completed for my freight car fleet of nonsense. I actually finished this one last weekend before I left for Daytona Beach and work in Volusia County.

This car is decorated for the WOLF ROCK RAILROAD. It is a little more whimsical than most of what I do, but I still think it works. I am pleased with the finished result.
The freight car is a regular old Blue Box Athearn 50 foot steel fishbelly gondola. It had all the cast on details removed. Wire grap irons and A-Line stirrup sill steps were installed. It is painted with Scalecote 2 paint. The decals were printed by Don Manlick. Of course, wheels, trucks, and couplers are from Kadee. There is a cast load of scrap steel plate in the car.

Speaking of Gondolas, I shot a few photos of the recent additions of these two AS&W 70 ton gondolas offered by the South Shore Model Railway Club, on the layout:

Some folks report that their P5a does not have any pulling power. I coupled mine on to an 83 car freight (yes, mostly Kadee wheels and trucks, Kevin ) and they walked right away with that train. Sure, they struggled when encountering the 1.5% grade and I gave them a helping hand, but on the flat and mostly curved track they handled that big train with no problem. That's about all the real ones could do

Good morning from sunny and mild Northeast Ohio! (after days of rain).
Kevin, thanks for starting us out, good looking gondola.
Ed, nice gons also, and like your P5a's, I got rid of all my electrics when I moved out of Toledo and the electric minded club members.
Here is another West India Fruit Boxcar, in 1958 (probably due to all the salt air corrosion) the WIF repainted all their boxcars into this new scheme of green with yellow lettering. Intermountain 1944 Welded side AAR Boxcar kit, painted with Scalecoat II Hunter Green Paint and lettered with Speedwitch Media decals.
Jumping forward 20 years is a Proto 2000 PS 4427 CF Covered Hopper Kit. The C&NW acquired around 500 of these cars in 1969 after they came off the original TLDX leases when the leases expired. They were originally painted in C&NW Green with yellow lettering, and repainted in the late 70's in the Zito Yellow with black lettering. Car was painted with Scalecoat II C&NW Yellow Paint and lettered with Oddballs decals. Also added a Plano etched metal roofwalk to the kit.
Since Ed showed off his new P5a's, here are my new Rapido CP FP7's. I have always liked the CP Script Scheme!

Great to see the West India box car and those sharp FP7s. I agree about the script CP
Zito yellow. OK, now I know the name for that. Is IS brighter than the original C&NW yellow, yes? Sharp car. Easy to spot, too.
I built some of those silos when they first came out, Jim. They sure are tedious.

Kevin - I like the extra work you put into the gondola. Stripping it down, painting and installing detail parts adds that extra "nice" stuff
Ed - The steel rolls in your gondolas catch my eye, and they look good. Sure would like to see a better shot of that power wagon!

Ed, Those Artitec crane trucks are nice, I've one too, from what I gather they look to be mid-40s GMC.

A couple weeks ago I replaced an old Digitrax basic decoder with a TCS Wow Sound with Keep-Alive decoder kit in my first-run Heritage 0-8-0 switcher. Here's a before-and-after video of the performance:

Mark, I just watched the video that you posted of the before and after of the decoder installation. What a difference it makes in the running of your switcher and the sound is just GREAT!

Thanks Kevin, I appreciate it! A lot of hours went into this, and I'm pretty satisfied with the results.
The dark shading around the posts is an enamel rust colored wash. I used a brush to apply a light layer. As soon as it dries, I took a rag and wiped off the areas between the ribs, leaving it in the recesses, including the door. I picked up this technique from a sci-fi modeler on youtube, thought I would give it a try, and it worked. I left it dry for 24 hours before sealing it. The key is using a gloss coat (I used pledge floor care) for the enamel wash to get it to wipe off.
