Scale Weight Car Scratchbuild
Posted by GERARD DEMBECK on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 8:38 AM

I remember that one of the major magazines had an article on scratchbuilding an HO Scale Weight Car for the Lehigh Valley (I think). Does anyone remember the article and which magazine it was in? I have been checking my back issues, but cannot find it.

Thank you for your help.

I can't recall any specific article for building a scale test car, but there are lots of prototype photos of such cars, and not much to do to make one.

I've built 5 or 6 of them but it looks like I've given away most of them, as I can only find two on my layout.

Construction is pretty simple:  an MDC/Roundhouse or other manufacturers 4-wheel passenger truck, perhaps like the ones under this MoW car...

...a pair of Kadees, and some styrene, maybe a few grabirons, and some paint and lettering.  Oh, yeah, and some additional weight so they'll track well.

I could take a couple of close-up photos if you feel they'd be of use, but there's not really anything complicated about building them.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Many, many years ago, Model Railroader had a book on scratchbuilding. I used to visit our local library often to sit down and read it. On one of the last pages, they had a diagram of a B&O car. The diagram probably came from one of their past issues. I wish I had made a copy of that diagram.

Doctor Wayne, Dean, and all, thank you for your help and advice.

Thanks everybody for their input. I finally found the article. It was in the March 2012 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman.
