My month so far can be summed up with to much train related stuff to have all gone down in just over two weeks.
First I feel little need to describe why I was hanging out in Echo Canyon nearly a week and a half ago on Wednesday...
Of course I got to experience the parking jam all the way down from Echo through I84 to Ogden. But managed to still pull off at a few other spots to take shots in Henefer and Peterson. Then I got to watch them strut them around Riverdale Yard in Ogden.
To drown out the over taste of steam I needed to visit some modern day commuter rail units at the Stadler plant in Salt Lake City on May 10.
Then a straight rush from Stadler to the local Tooele Valley museum for our own private event, followed by spending several hours the next day volunteering at the family event we had the next day.
Then of course waking up early the next day to drive up the canyon, yet again to set up on a Sunday morning to watch Big Boy storm Castle Rock.
Did I mention the crowds were crazy? No attempt to chase that day and I am glad I didn't even try.
Again I try to wash the taste of the Big Boy out of my mouth with a nice quite moment with a classic GE used in switching service in my town during the weekdays early this week.
You'd think with the big black tea kettle gone from my state by now I'd be safe from the hobby yet, but somehow I still ended up in Provo yesterday to operate with some friends on the local Hudson Terminal Railroad layout. Somehow my friend at Tintic Range Railway (https://www.facebook.com/Tintic-Range-Railway-924599314374614/) managed to snap this photo of me throttling around a Penn Central ALCO thats just barely visible in the corner while another friend of mine is throwing switches.
With that I declare the great Utah train party over! Now I am running on fumes at work on my Saturday shift, after I had a long drive home last night from the operating session and need a nap.

Flo, give the gang and I a Ed a Crown Royal now he gotten the harold correct and leave a stein outside for Ulrich.
Messed with the fascia and soffit today, worse than I had hoped but not surprised. Most of the rafters ends are rotten and will need to be repaired, I seen DYI shows on how to do it so I think I maybe up to the task. What I was surpried by was the way the rafters where shaped. I was thinking the rafters ends would be cut say at a 45 degree angle or what ever was need so the fascia was straight up and down, Nope. It comes down, then has a 45 degree angle then goes straight so the rafters ends are straight for the fascia. Need to set up a new photo hosting accont so I can post photos.
Ed Heck if you saw my mess you know why I am not worried about Raccoons getting in! It is a darn Raccoon Hotel, there is Vacancy Sign and the front desk Raccoon Clerk moved from Louisiana to man it. He all so works at the Y.R.C.A at the front desk.

Train front - Anyone have a Rapido 10-5 sleeper manual they could scan for me? I got one that has no manual, and Rapido's web site link gives a 404 error... I'm especially interested in lighting and disassembly info. I know the lighting is battery powered, and activates and deactivates with a magnetic switch, but can't seem to get it to cooperate...

Health front - Asthma is acting up a bit, I think it's just weather and allergy related.

Travis. ... I was standing very close to you in one of your photos. It is your fifth photo with 4014 and 844 emerging from a tunnel. At the time, I was taking a video. The video is of the entire train as it moved from the tunnel until out of view to the right.
A note about the Heber Valley scenic train ride . It was a very enjoyable trip with very nice scenic views. ... Two days after we rode it, they had a minor derailment with the GP9 and a coach off the rails because a switch was not correctly aligned . Service was suspended until track was repaired.
Refreshing outside this morning. 52° feels good after several warm mornings lately. Storms tonight and tomorrow.

Raccoons in the attic... my daughter had them. Caused thousands of dollars of damage to the insulation.
Ken, we are still pulling for you. I know that after some months, you will find it difficult to believe you ever were addicted to it. It took me a while.

I wish I could... now I need to get back to work. Next week is going to be very hard on me. Motivation is lacking right now.
I plan a two week trip next year into New England, but that might get put off until 2021. Next year is an Olympic year, so I think I might take time off for that instead. We will see.
It is sure a lot less expensive to stay at home and watch the Olympics.

Below is one I tried to post last night, but had difficulties then with it. Shoshone Falls in southern Idaho is quite remarakable. The main falls is 212 feet high which is about 50' greater the height of Niagra Falls .
The May 10th celebration at Promonotory Summit was absolutely incredible ! ! ! ... It was very crowded, but worth all of the waiting time.
Below is photo of traffic on the way to Promonotory. It is in a remote location, and there is a long two-lane road to get there. This picture was taken 14 miles away, and we were going at about 8 mph.
This is part of the crowd. They had huge big scene TV's so people could watch and hear what was going on. Speakers included Utah Senators, Utah governor, two Cabinet members, and others. One of the politicians got side-tracked and spoke some political malarky. Most people appeared not to like that. (Reminded me I am glad Steve O keeps politics out of this forum.)
I stood at a baracade and watched the reinactment of the driving of the Golden Spike where I took this photo. At the conclusion of the event, they had a big fireworks display,. A formation of fighter jets did a flyover. Amazing !
We stayed most of the day in Promonotory. Late in the afternoon, they did another reinactment. We could see more of it because most of the crowd had departed.
The main building was closed to the public and used by officials to handle various tasks. The gift shop was temporarily moved to an outside pavillion where people needed to wait an hour in line to but a tee shirt or other items.
USPS had a place where you could buy commemorative Golden Spike stamps issued on that date. They would cancel them for those who wanted that.
The entire event was very well orgainized. Ample number of park rangers were located everywhere to provide assistance if needed.
It was a great day !
I'm glad you had a good time on your trip Garry. This would have been something I really would have loved to see so thanks for sharing.

I am going to close on my house in a couple of weeks. Then, the interior will be painted, and then, after a year and a half, closer to two years, I can start putting my layout back together!
It's been a long time. I'll have to reconfigure it some, as the train room is a different shape and a lot smaller. But, I'm retired and I will have the time.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Did major cleaning this morning as I hadn't been able to do much between the knee and then the plantar fascia or whatever it was keeping me off my left foot.
Reproving the yard tracks is going nicely though if I had it to do over again I'd use electrofrog or just my old standby Atlas turnouts. Lots of little issues around the power routing including now trying to clean the contacts properly on the moving rails. I will say though I have lots less issue with the mechanical operation of the PECO turnouts. I always seemed to have issues with the Atlas being picked by the running gear. All code 100 as well. I'll just keep cleaning and adding jumpers and drops until it all works flawlessly. I will say I'm closer with this layout than I've ever been before.
Well, back to the chores and maybe later some train time. C.U.L., J.R.

TF Can I have to open of a Soffit? I have seen some on line where the aluminum cover is all there is. I have seen some like mine that is plywood with 3"X12" holes cut in to them like mine? I have thinking along the lines of cutting 2 section of plywood leaving a 4" gap the entire lenght of the soffit to help let the heat out.

Do you mean on this website. I have no such problems. It could be the ads that are causing this. A good ad blocker will help. Many of the protocols used by XP have long been depreciated, but that by itself should not cause these kinds of problems.
What version of Firefox / Chrome etc are you using. Microsoft Explorer is completely depreciated and is no longer supported by Microsoft, so it will no longer block gremlins. Microsoft Edge may work but I have found that it is rather crappy, you probablty need Microsoft 7 or better to run it.
Hpe that helps, if not can you explain the issues in more detail. Like a broklen locomotive, he have to see it to fix it.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

The last time I replaced rotted rafter ends I removed the facia, and soffit. I measured out from the top plate at each end of the roof, (first rafter) to clear the bad wood on the most damaged rafters. Use a chalk line to make a mark on all of the rafters, so that all of the cuts are the same. I used a tri-square laid on the chalk mark to make the line where I was going to cut the rafter off.
Use a "sister piece"slightly longer than an exsisting rafter, hold it in place with speed clamps, and use the exsisting rafter as a template, mark, and cut to shape.
Do this with the rafter end you cut off, you now have two templates, cut the amount you need to finish the job. Cut all the rafter ends off. I would recommend using #9-2-1/2 inch decking screws that are driven with a T-20 Star Drive bit.
Fasten the sister piece to the inside of the first rafter, and then fasten the replacement end to the sister, in line with the rafter you have cut the end off. Speed clamps are very helpful in doing this.
Vent strips that I used come in eight foot lengths,(aluminum) I used 1/4 inch PT plywood, installed the vent strip, and then cut the plywood to width to fit on either side. Much easier than having to layout holes in the soffit. Working nights and weekends, you should be able to finish in 7-9 days, per side. Getting a methods laid out, and tools together, will be the hardest part.
Using an oscillating saw with a half round blade is handy for cutting the rafter ends off.
I generally use five screws in the sister piece, and the replacement end. 2-1-2, set about 3/4-1 inch in from the ends, and one in the middle.

Jan, as long as we're mooching advise, I wonder. On my 1929 vintage garage, the ends of the rafters overhanging the walls were getting rotted on the north side The entire thing is not to modern code being built with 2 x 4 roof rafters (bungalow shape roof). Rather than cut and replace, I treated the rotted stuff with deck sealer (Thompsons) and then sistered the rafters with pairs of 3/4 marine plywood a foot or so past the walls into good wood and through bolted inside. It seems to have held up, but did I set myself up for issues later ?

It looks like we will finally get some rain. I could hear some thunder a while ago.
I'm going through a lull with my layout. I've only been at this a little over a year, but for the past days, I just haven't felt like working on it. I attribute part of it to having issues with a gas station I'm working on. I just wasn't able to get it right, and I hate to not finish it. I've got to just let the unfinished station sit, and start to do something else.
I live so far from stores or clubs, so I mainly have to get my inspiration online. I appreciate those of you who post pictures, both of real railroads and also of your layouts. The pictures really help people like me.

Both at home and in the shop I have found it better to have more than one project at a time. If I get fustrated with something, I put it aside (unless there is a deadline I must meet in the shop) and do something else. In most cases giving it a rest and concentrating on another project allows a solution to fall into place. You're working in in N if i remember correctly so I don't have too much experience with things that small. Can you find a pic of the pump you want and print to size for as many as you need? Would it work to then wet the paper and glue the prints to the pumps then trim as needed ? I used to spend a ton of time on the little details others here are so good at, but as my age advances and progress on the layout slows, I have become a bigger fan of the 5/50 philosophy (5 feet/50{scale} miles per hour). Just a thought. J.R.
Game of Thrones ended last night...
When I got to West Palm Beach last night I had a hotel room at the Hampton Inn by the airport. I checked in and they DID NOT HAVE HBO! What, I stay in Hilton hotels 200+ night a year, and never found one that did not have HBO.
I explained my situation to the desk clerk that I needed to cancel my room, because it was the most important television night ever, and I NEEDED a hotel with HBO. I have been watching this show for ten years, and I need to know how it ends.
They got me a room at the Hampton Inn in Riviera Beach, and verified it had HBO.
After watching to show... I kind of wish I would have just stayed at the first hotel.

After the preceeding two shows, any sort of conclusion would have been an improvement. I think if the first few seasons had been a poorly thought out and written as the last, the show would never have caught on. As it is hundreds of thousands of people want a rewrite. Fours shows was simply not enough to show the character development that led to the ending. J.R.

Well no problem.Like The Hobbit and then Lord of the Rings, I had read the books but didn't have HBO so no worries. Then on one of the flights down under one whole season was on the inflight entertainment system so with 14 hours to kill I watched the whole thing - twice counting the return trip weeks later. Long story short, the CFO approved HBO and actually watched all the prior episodes before I got to them. I suppose I could have lived without all those hours in front of the one eyed monster but there you go. Same as the I-phone to keep up with work E-mail while on the road you get sucked into the vortex. J.R.

JR Good advice. mbinsewi also told me about printing the pumps. I had already finished the pumps, but I have now printed some signs and a Blue Rhino propane cage for outside the gas station.
I do need to take your advice and get several projects going at once. It probably would help just to run the trains for a while instead of building full time.
That's why I like this forum. Inexperienced people like me get to hear from modelers with years of effort. Thanks.

What's GofT???? Never heard of it. Of course, I cancelled Cable about 14 years ago since I hadn't turn the idiot box on for several years. That was right after a half hour episode of MASH turned into an hour long show and they cut several scenes out of it in order to get all the stupid insulting blasted comercials in!
Frankly I can't find anything on the TV these days I would sit and watch... I have much more fun stuff to do!

I have seen all of five minutes of GoT. I have some people I know who are really into it, but I have no desire to watch it. But they showed me a clip from that last episode involving a dragon, and well dragons are pretty cool. When it comes to sword and shield fantasy, Tolkien all the way for me.
I have to admit, I watch a lot of TV. Actually, I listen to a lot of TV. I have a TV in my layout room, and when I am in there, it is turned on. It is almost always on Turner Classic Movies, and I listen while I work.
As for the cell phone, the school board required me to have one and carry it at all times. When I retired, it was one of the first things to go. I haven't missed it, but my wife as her iPhone when we travel.
