I just finished my first big weathering project for my layout and just looking for some feedback on how to improve in the future. I did have some issues with the decals and I am still attaching the the handrail, bu those are all the problems I know of.

OK, I see this is your second thread on the same subject. You might want to stick with just one thread? I'm sure the moderator with combine the two.
Not sure where your going with the weathering, does most of the white get rubbed off, to give the gray a faded, weathered look?

Oka, thanks for the advice on the thread. I was planning on rubbing some off but overall it was a really light colored locomotive in its later years as shown by this photo.

OK, I get it, now that's the picture you should be using for your prototype picture in your thread.
Now I see what your doing.
I think the white on your model is a little over bearing, and I think it would help if you rubbed a little bit off, just a little at a time, until you get the look of the prototype.
All in all, off to a good start.
What did you weather it with and will it rub off? It's very thick. The grills are plugged up, there seem to be layers.
Get yourself an airbrush and dilute reefer gray or any other light gray. That tones down the color a lot and in a more uniform fashion.
In the weathed prototype photo the fuel tanks have more rust than weathering and very little paint. You have lots of weathering next to dark paint and no rust.
Weathering is definitely an art. Simply painting a loco as it was new is just point and shoot. Keep at it.

That 1999 has to be a unique tag.
Your original loco is looking better with some of the white toned down, but, it's getting so full of paint you can't see any of the body features, such as cabinet doors.

I know what you mean about the paint thicking, lucky I am using acrylics the come off easily with alcohol wipes.
