Where to find walthers locomotive exploded diagrams
Posted by Bering on Monday, March 11, 2019 7:16 PM

I am trying to disassemble a walthers plymouth, for the life of me i can't get the shell off.  It seems to have several tabs holding part of the shell but they are in unaccesable areas.

MR did a write up and mentioned how to get the shell off:

That may help, I hope.

Good Luck, Ed

I guess look for any screws on the bottom of the loco, and have at it.  Couplers probably have to come off, same with the fuel tank, sometimes more screws are exposed when you remove the tank.

Google search?  HOSeeker doesn't have hardly any Walthers locomotive diagrams, and another source I find handy, Google Walthers plymouth decoder install.

Some times, some one who has done this, makes a video, and shows you how to take it apart.

Also, look on the decoder manufacturers web sites, I know TCS has a great list of decoder installs, that show you how to take it apart.

AND, call Walthers, and ask.

You would think that Walthers would have a database of diagrams, but I've never found one.

Sometimes after looking at enough install videos, you catch a method for removing the shell.

Good luck.

Guys,One thing I've learned over the years is  having a office type paper file folder for keeping locomotive diagrams is a good thing to have handy for maintenance or the need to order a replacement part.

This folder can be stored with your Kalmbach modeling books and your railroad books for easy access.

For some reason there doesn't seem to be much in the way of Walthers diagrams out there. Have you tried a YouTube search? I've found many useful "how to" videos for model railroaders on there, including one for maintaining a Walthers Trainline F40PH similar to one I bought about two weeks ago. Maybe you can find one on there for your loco as well.

It's not off yet?

From that article:

"As per the instructions, I removed the cab and hood as a single unit. A screw behind the coupler box holds the hood to the chassis, while locking tabs hold the front and rear of the cab to the chassis."

I squeezed the cab and gently rocked it back and force until I could get my hobby knife between the plastic shell and the chassis to disengage the tabs."
