....I have a theory on that. You and Wayne and others stored tons of photos on Photobucket. I, on the other hand, did not use Photobucket as a photo storage site. I had very few photos on Photobucket at the time of the maasacre. I only used Photobucket to act as a 3rd party server when I wanted to post a photo on this forum, and I didn't do that often.....

I don't use photobucket for storage, only for sharing photos on forums like this.

My comments are in reference to the volume of photos that a user has on Photobucket. Wayne, how many photos do you have on Photobucket, if I may ask?

When I checked yesterday, there were just over 6700 photos there, all solely for use on forums like this.  Photobucket shows that to be 5% of my allotted storage capacity.
When somebody here or on another forum asks about something to which am able to reply, but I don't have a photo or photos available to illustrate my response, then I simply go take some suitable pictures, put them into photobucket, then include them in my submission.

And, therein lies the difference, at least in my opinion. 6700 photos may represent only 5% of your allotted storage capacity, but those 6700 photos are tempting to Photobucket. You are a prime candidate for fees and with that many photos to deal with you are unlikely, or at least less likely, to resist fees. I, on the other hand, had only a few dozen photos in my Photobucket account. I wasn't worth the effort.

Maybe? But how much effort goes into a mass Email or two advising all customers of a policy change?

That is the part that does not make sense to this day, why were some people apparently treaded differently?

OK, let's turn the question around. Why should Photobucket bother with the little guy like me? How difficult is it to send a mass email to just larger users?

The unanswered question is what do they gain by not asking for your business?

The answer to that might explain a lot, but I agree, by mistake or plan, that was a bad business move on their part.

It's called the 80/20 Principle. It is an old business adage that about 20 percent of a company's customers produce about 80 percent of its sales.

Maybe so, but I have been self employed most of my life, and I have never been able to predict in advance which customers will be the most valuable 20%.

So I do my best to treat them all the same.

I hope everyone knows this, but you CAN ctrl c ctrl v pictures directly from a document on your google drive to the forums. Thats what I do, and as already mentioned, its free!

What exactly is my google drive?

Please explain to an older guy not steeped in this computer language where these terms seem to be thrown around with abandon. I've lost count on the number of times I was instructed to go to this or that page and click on this button,...only to find its NOT there?

So can you give me some instruction?

I would love to hear how to upload photos WITHOUT employing a third party that might, or might not, be here tomorrow.

Following up with Brian's question, would uploading pics from a Google drive give access to my drive from the server where I'm uploading?, or, does the upload to the forum essentially copy my pic from my Google drive onto their server.  I assume the latter doesn't happen since that eats capacity at the uploaded party's server.

So I'm assuming that in order to see my pic, my Google drive is being accessed from/by the website from where I "uploaded" the pic.  (not really uploaded because its not actually copied to and stored in the space owned by the website)

I think this may be why many choose to use third parties.  The third party stores the pic in their capacity, which costs money to expand and maintain, hence the fees.

Edit:  What I'm getting at is that the Google "drive" is not really a drive on your computer, like the C:  D: E: drives are.  Its a cloud based third party itself, in this case, for storing stuff like pics or docs and spreadsheets.

Google drive is a cloud service, linked to android phones and tablets that are Google supported like my Samsung S4, or my wife's Samsung phone.

It is included with the service you buy from your carrier, they pay Google to provide the whole operating system, apps, and features. In return Google has first shot at providing you with their products because they are preloaded in the software and all integrated.

Every picture I take with my tablet is automatically uploaded to my Google drive, and yes I can link them, send them, copy them.

But, I still do most stuff on my desktop and that requires another step.

Most of my pictures are actually backed up 3-4 different places/ways.

Yes.  I just edited my post.  I was taking steps to get there.  When you upload (or "save") to Google "drive", you're already using a third party to store stuff, essentially.

Its not the same thing as the drives on your computer.  Google uses the term drive as a marketing ploy, because it can function in exactly the same way as a hard drive, except it exists on their server or network of servers, not on your harddrive.

And, to their credit, it probably is more secure than a person's own harddrive, in terms of being hacked by bad guys.  But, all of that storage and security will come at a price....if not now, later.

I have no doubt the price is already built in to the price of the $800 tablet in my hand, and the $200 a month bill I pay for 3 lines, 2 phones, tablet and lots of data......

And they hope to sell me more services, YouTube without ads, music streaming, etc.

If you are not the customer, then you zre the product.

As for LION... Him has his own server.

Yo actually have a web server built into your microsoft operating system, but if you do not know what it is or how to use it, then I reccommend against trying it since it opens a port on your computer to people accessing your photos.

Yes.  Desktops and laptops are going the way of the dodo bird.

Phones and tablets, relatively, have no storage or computing capacity.  To provide that, Google and others have their cloud based drives.  Without phones and tablets being used as computers, there would be little need for the cloud.

And what's funny is that cloud isn't really an abstract thing in no-mans land.  It exists on a bunch of computers, in big nondescript buildings in undisclosed locations, with gobs and gobs of air conditioning and physical security.

You cannot do that because Kalmbach does not store or host forum pictures.

If you look under "Community" on top of this page, you will see "user Photos" but that has nothing to do with the forums, It is monitored, and thwy will not accept just any picture.

LONGER ANSWER:

Web pages are transmitted between computers as HTML files.

In this file are instructions to go to another place and download this photo here.

That is the place where you have to save your photos for publication on places such as the forum.

This forum has an icon of a picture, and in that you write the location URL of your photograph, and the forum will include that in your post.

Here is a nice picture that I took in New York City:

The code that I ahad to write was http://broadwaylion.com/lion/!-lc121030.jpg

if you click on it you will see the same photo as above.

My computer is not a dodo bird. You really canot do much production work on a tablet or phone, they are toys. You cannot even do serious gaming on them.

If I need to psend that much money, then I want to have a real computer.

I am running seven servers and 30 workstations. My big back up server has 16 TB of RAM.

I do my final backups to the cloud, to a well known backup service.

I even refuse to use a laptop for real production work.

My workstation has four monitors attached to it.

And that feature has been available how long? I have been posting pictures on here for nearly a decade.........

Sheldon

According to a quick google search, google drive has been around since 2013.

To answer all the other questions, you get access to this drive by making a gmail account. You get 15 GB of storage with every gmail account. I have noticed however, that you need to first upload the pictures and then insert them into a google docs document (google's version of a word document), before you can copy and past them.

Someone else brought up a good point in regards to microsoft's one drive. If you own a copy of Windows 10, you also have a free cloud service. Its called microsoft one drive. It has the symbol of a cloud if you are trying to find it, or you can just search it on your computer.

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

....And, therein lies the difference, at least in my opinion. 6700 photos may represent only 5% of your allotted storage capacity, but those 6700 photos are tempting to Photobucket. You are a prime candidate for fees and with that many photos to deal with you are unlikely, or at least less likely, to resist fees.....

As far as I'm aware, the photobucket site alerted users about the planned fee changes, albeit not all that far in advance.  As my paid account was coming up for renewal, I contacted them to learn exactly what my options might be.  They responded by "grandfathering" my account, from the August renewal date until the end of the year, at the same rate I had been paying for several years - about $35.00/year.

As the end of the year approached, they contacted me regarding renewal, and offered a very attractive package (relative to the high prices which scared everybody away) with increased storage limits and unlimited bandwidth.  That fee is, naturally, higher than the previous deal they gave me, but certainly not so onerous that I would have declined.

I am retired and while not suffering financially, neither am I wealthy.  Had the only option been the higher prices, I wouldn't have hesitated to abandon the photobucket ship.  I can post all the photos I want on my other forum, as attachments, for free.

If photobucket folds or gets silly again, my pictures there (and here) will be gone, but I'll still have them in my own files, and continue to add to them and share them elsewhere, but not from another hosting site - I can't be bothered.

One other thing, Rich.....

....if it weren't for photobucket, you would never have seen this...

...I added a codicil to my will regarding it. Smile, Wink & Grin

I realize that there is a real need for home computers, but the trends in mobile uses for technology services are rising. The dodo birds didn't disappear over night, but there will come that day.

My point was similar to yours.  The pic has to be loaded to a thrid party before the rest of the internet can see it.  Google simply calls their third party host a drive, implying that the pic you save to the Google drive is in your computer when its really not.

I've mentioned some boating forums I participated in in the past,...that allowed images to be posted to their forums, but put a limit on the size. They did NOT require one to pick out a third party host.

Can you imagine a forum like this without photos??

Historically, we asked for pics to be kept under 640 pixels (width), but
720 to 800 is OK these days as screens have become large

How about the number of GOOD postings and GOOD information on this forum that became virtually worthless when Photobucket pulled their stunt?
