posting photos ImgBB has a new wrinkle
Posted by BigDaddy on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 8:22 AM

If you click on a ImgBB pic in the forum, it takes you to a page to register.  This is different that the way it used to work, where you could see an enlarged version.

The work around, if you don't like mandatory registrations, is to right click on the picture, Copy image location, the open a tab in your browser and paste that image location.

For example, this thread, click on one of Brent's pics.

http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/13/p/274702/3130965.aspx#3130965

I smell Photobucket in the air.   ImgBB will figure it out and this won't work either.  That's the downside of free photo hosting, eventually someone has to pay.

I’m OK unless Google starts charging for Blogger.  I host my Forum pictures on my blog, it’s much easier than the old PhotoBucket too.  If I already have the picture on my blog that I want to post on the Forum it’s a simple Copy Location and Paste, if it isn’t already on my blog then I add it to a Host Page and go with it.

I can´t confirm this. I can still click on the picture and view an enlarged version without being logged in to Imgur or taken to a page to register.

Could be a browser issue.

Edit: Sorry  - my bad! Imgur works fine ImgBB doesn´t.

Could be a browser issue.

I've been using Chrome the last week or so, so I used Fire Fox, and tried to open Brent's picture, still get the "sign up" page.

I didn't try it in IE.

I also did what Henry suggest, and yes, I got the picture ok in a seperate tab, but I couldn't enlarge it.  Which might have something to do with where the picture originated.

It behaves as I described on Edge, Chrome and Firefox.  YMMV In windows, you can increase any image size by hitting control and the + key simultaneously.

Ctrl - makes is smaller

I'm trying to do a little research on both of these photo hosting sites. Have either of you 2 gentlemen used alternative sites to the ones you are now using?

I'm just at the beginning of this search, but I did find Imgur comprehensive, BUT a bit of a pain in the X to naviagate around. Is that perhaps because I did not spend enough time on it?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the imgbb site seemed to have a fairly low storage amount/size/?  Did not spell out how one might increase that??

When I read this summation, Flicker also sounded like a good candidate??

Photobucket claimed I exceded my storage capacity and won't let me download my own photos. That was after a good chunk of my photos disappeared from the site.

Flikr wants me to share too much info, everytime I link to a photo.  I know how to work around that but have stopped using it.

Navigation on Imgur was a lot easier.  I think all these sites want everyone to post a lot of photos that everyone else can look at.

What I do with Imgur is log in, right click my name, see all images.  Then on the left I can select the album I really want to see.  (you used to be able to bookmark that album directly)
The album I use for forum posts is MR and once I select that album, it is easy to add photos to only that album.  It is also easy to find the BBlink (bulletin board link in archaic internet speak) that gives you a text link that you can directly paste as text in the forum, without touching the photo icon.

The link looks like this, with brackets instead of parenthesis

To each their own.  While I find IMGRR to work great for me, it may not do so for others.  I suggest that the only way one will know if the photo site is right for them, is to give it a test - maybe a month.

Like so many other "versus" subjects that come up on the Forum, it pretty much all comes down to the individual's taste or what they already use/own.

And this didn't sound that encouraging for Imgbb,..

The owner of the website is hiding his identity. Spammers use this information to promote services to website owners. Some website owners therefor chose to hide their contact details. However, it can also be misused by scammers. Our algorithm gives a high rating if the identity of the website owner is shown.

3 countries are used for the technical set-up of this website. For smaller websites this is uncommon as they usually have one hosting company that arranges everything (the domain name, DNS, firewall, email and webservers).

So very true.

I still use Photobucket. The current fee is reasonable, I know how it works, EVERY photo I have ever posted on a forum still shows up, going back a decade now.

But most importantly, I have not wasted time moving pictures to new sites, learning how they work, etc, etc.

The current Photobucket fee is less than I earn in one hour, I would have wasted 10, or even 100 times that switching sites.

And, the other forum I post photos on does not allow editing of old posts, so all the technical stuff I have posted about GRAVELY tractors would be without its photos.

I know it bugs people that they changed the rules in the middle of the game, but really, were did you think money came from? If web sites cannot monetize their product one way, they will do it another.

Just wait and see with these other sites.

Can you break that MR album up into sub-categories of albums?...ie Logging Area/Scene,...Container Area/Scene, Steel Mill Area/scene,...etc?

I was trying a little experiment with that, but having trouble naviagating their boxes/icons? It appeared to be jumping me around their site like that dreaded Facebook does??

A few random thoughts...

I don't put "personal" photos on Photobucket, or the web in general. My wife does more than enough of that with facebook......I'm not on facebook.

So if others want to look at my pictures of model trains, real trains, architecture/construction, GRAVELY tractors, and similar stuff I post on forums, they are welcome to.

I should have put my Photobucket pictures in albums to begin with, and may start using some albums, but moving them changes their address....that is a non starter.

By my understanding, the only way people lost photos on Photobucket was by a total refusal to pay even the basic minimal fee, before the temporary crazy high fee? I could be wrong?

If you google "GRAVELY 16-G", or "GRAVELY 18-GLX", your image results will include my tractor. Not sure if they get found on the tractor forum or directly on Photobucket, or both,  but again, I'm not uploading anything that personal to worry about.

If I want to send a personal picture to friend or family, it surely will not be by uploading them to any third party.....

Personal info to register? I don't think Photobucket has much more than my email and name?

Like Sheldon, I'm still with photobucket, with a very affordable paid plan, initially created when I began losing my free monthly bandwidth allotment due to "bot" activity by various search engines.

My "Library" there consists of 95 Albums (helps somewhat to find specific types of photos) and a current total of of just over 6700 photos, which has used-up 5% of my allowable storage.

The photos which I have in photobucket are almost entirely train-related - real ones or models, with no personal photos.

While the site navigation is not quite as user-friendly as it had been, I've managed some work-arounds to compensate for those changes.
I find their tech support outstanding, particularly when I tried to renew my subscription a few years ago, and experienced computer problems, which caused me to miss the renewal date and an associated deal on pricing.  After explaining the computer issue, they extended my renewal date, including the price break, too.

They are also under different management than the one which introduced the prices which drove away so many users, so if you're having  problems with other third-party hosting sites, it might be worthwhile to check out photobucket again.

On one hand I understand that, but on the other not completely.

Businesses change their "terms" all the time, prices go up, business models change.

Are you mad at the grocery store when the price of milk goes up? Or when the BOGO promotion ends? I doubt anywhere that Photobucket promised free photo hosting in perpetuity?

Was that first pricing a bit over the top? Maybe so, maybe not, depends on your point of view.

But, they seem to have done ok, reworked their business model and they are still around. The fees now are more than reasonable in my view.

BECAUSE, I don't have the time, or desire to play on the computer all day to save $40. Again I can earn that in 30 minutes and just move on, and have fun with my trains and my tractor hobby.

And me leaving Photobucket would have meant not just the loss of access to photos I have posted here, but also the loss of access to hundreds of photos linked to technical info I have posted on the MyTractorForum, where relinking would require administrator intervention. I was happy to do that for my fellow hobbiests on that forum.

Look at youtube, more adds, subscription fees, they are monetizing that to the max now that so many people are "hooked". I doubt many peope have stopped using youtube.....

So I understand not going back, but please understand, I'm happy I stayed with Photobucket during their transition. And every time one of these threads pop up, I'm even more happy I stayed put.

All my posts still have their photos, and dollar cost averaged over 10 years, it has been dirt cheap and easy to manage.

Sheldon I can afford it, but to me it's like I when I rent one of those storage lockers.  They set the price, which in this case was $0. That was there business decision, not mine.  There are a lot of comparables that offer free storage of files on the cloud.  Dropbox and Google are just 2 examples.

Now Photobucket says we never said you could put that much in the locker.  It's your fault and you can't just take your stuff and leave, unless you buy a subscription.

That's a lot different than Youtube, or the local TV station making me watch ads before I get to watch the video.

C'mon, Sheldon, you're smarter than that. It is not the fact that Photobucket started charging fees. It was the way Photobucket did it.

Without any warning whatsoever, Photobucket deleted all of my photos from the sites on which they were posted, seized control over the photos in my account, and said nothing about fees ever. I never once got any communication from Photobucket. I only knew what happened from reading about it on this forum.

How's that for once bitten, twice shy?

The part I have yet to figure out is why some people had their photos locked or deleted and others did not?

I am not doubting you as to what happened, but my experiance, and Wayne's, was just the opposite. Our accounts continued to work fine, we got notice that one of several services would need to be purchased, we made a choice and paid.

Everything continued to work fine?

But Henry, why would you have to take your stuff? Why would you put photos on a site like that without having them backed up yourself? If you did not like their new terms just walk away.

I have thousands of photos that are not on Photobucket, they are backed up three different ways/places.

Every photo I have on Photobucket is right here on my hard drive, and well backed up. They have no such leverage over me.

I choose to use Photobucket to share some photos, not to store my photos at all.

I have a theory on that. You and Wayne and others stored tons of photos on Photobucket. I, on the other hand, did not use Photobucket as a photo storage site. I had very few photos on Photobucket at the time of the maasacre. I only used Photobucket to act as a 3rd party server when I wanted to post a photo on this forum, and I didn't do that often.

Anyhow, my theory is that Photobucket had no interest in me or my account because they reasoned that I was small potatoes and would not agree to pay their fees. So, they simply locked me out without warning and never bothered to contact me even after the fact.

I haven't posted any pictures here yet, because I haven't signed up to any applicable photo hosting service.

I do have my own website, so when I get around to it, I will set up a folder there where I can upload photos that I want to share here.

That may well be, but it seems it would have been labor intense on their part to even sort out who might pay and who might not?

Currently I have about 500 photos on Photobucket, back then it was maybe 350, but as I just explained to Henry, they are not "stored" there, they are stored on my hard drive, and my back up systems, Photobucket just has copies of the stuff I want to share on forums or other web links.

I don't use any of the other "features" Photobucket is "selling".

They were photos I wanted to share.  They weren't deeply important so I didn't make a back up.  I take a lot of pics on my Iphone and regularly dump most of them.  I assume anything stored online or on a hard drive could be lost. I wasn't expecting a retroactive rule change.

I also have 2 very large boxes of 8mm film, slides and photos.  Do my kids really want me to convert the film to DVD's or thumb drives so they can see me waddling around or their grandmother lose her bathing suit top in the ocean waves?  I haven't decided what to do with them.

As any photographer knows, there are a few good shots mixed among dozens of bad or mediocre shots.  I could probably get rid of 80% of them

Actually I just did that with some.  My ex wife of 20 years ago just returned all my fathers' WW2 pics.  The focus wasn't all that good in many, 74 years later, most are faded beyond hope.  Aside from a couple pics of my dad, the only really spectacular photo was a guy in something a bit more than a loin cloth, wearing a bandolier of human skulls.  Guadalcanal or New Guinea?

I do agree that important photos should be backed up in more than one place.

I hope everyone knows this, but you CAN ctrl c ctrl v pictures directly from a document on your google drive to the forums. Thats what I do, and as already mentioned, its free!

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.
