N Scale Amtrak M.O.W. Equipment? Or at least decals?
Posted by CTConrail on Saturday, December 22, 2018 5:36 PM

Hey guys so I am wondering what is available for Amtrak MOW equipment in N Scale. I know there are a few things that were available before I left the hobby for a while years ago (old style orange paint Bachmann crane, Atlas caboose etc). I know there are 3 special edition multi manufacturer sets that are expensive and very hard to come by. Does anyone know of any other equipment available to be bought by the piece? I can't even find any Microscale Amtrak MOW decals to paint and make my own (does Microscale make them?) while we are on the subject does anyone even know of a color/brand paint that is close enough in color to the old orange or newer lime green or is that something I am going to have to mix up?

I know HO has a good amount of various MOW cars, even some in the newer lime green paint and logo but not much as far as N scale..story of an N scaler's life Wink

I would love to see pics of any custom painted and decaled Amtrak MOW equipment in N scale any of you guys may have done for inspiration. Thanks!

Atlas made 2 bay hopper cars lettered for Amtrak and Model Power made a 200 ton crane.

I'm sure there are other Amtrak MOW cars available.

I will have to keep an eye out for some of those hoppers. Are you sure Model Power made the crane? I know Bachmann made one.

Check out this link on Ebay. It's up for bidding right now. A complete N scale MOW set. It pretty Sweet. Also, Bachman made a crane available in N scale as well. I saw one up for bidding on Ebay right now as well.

When you look up the above link, scroll down to similar items... there are a couple other MOW sets also in different styles,  but all Amtrak. Cheers.

Thank you, yes those are the multi manufacturer sets I was talking about. Those are nice, especially the wrecker train set. I was hoping to find mow equipment by the car.

Herzog ballast hoppers are also prototypical- Amtrak leases a lot of them for NEC work, you can see them spotted in many places, or moving in work trains.

Thanks for this. I live here in the NEC and am not sure I have seen them. There is also a good chance I have and didn't realize it.

I have an old work train that I have upgraded to modern standards with Kadees and metal wheelsets.  The train never had a water tank car, so I found an old one at a show, painted it and made up decals on my computer and printer.

Nice! Do you have pictures? I would love to see it. I am going to do the same with decals. Ordered a small static mow tie crane kit I am going to paint and custom decal. I am looking also at the Tamper from Greenmax which is powered but a bit pricey. Would look nice painted in the lime green with blue Amtrak decals though.

Have you looked at Microscale Decals? They offer Amtrak decals. you may have to piecemeal it to make MoW equipment. Good luck!

My layout is pre Amtrack.

You must match the decal paper to the printer.  They only work with the right match.. No mixing.  Mine is inkjet.

My paper will work on ink or laser. Just not sure how they come out with ink.
