I am very happy and excited to be starting Weekend Photo Fun on the last weekend before Christmas.

.

I have a West Coast theme for my contributions this week. I have spent the past week in my "dorm room" in Tampa, and I have had time to work on Model Railroading stuff again.

.

Below are two 40 foot boxcars I painted and lettered this week. These are both built from Broadway Limited models of the NEW YORK CENTRAL model 486 all steel boxcar from the 1920s. This is a good solid model freight car, and you can still find a few still available undecorated. I lilke them better now that I figured out how to adapt them for Kadee trucks. The trucks that come with these models have a strange mouting setup.

The first one is lettered for the CALIFORNIA PACIFIC. This model represenst a car that was recently shopped, updated, and repainted into CALP's post war new image paint.

The second car is for the combined lines of the NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC and the SOUTHWESTERN PACIFIC forming the NSWP. This car has been in service for a while and is showing its age.

Union Station is very busy at this time of the year. There is a lot of activity with mail and express cars loaded with Christmas gifts going to love ones far away. Passengers traffic is booming as people travel to be with their families over the holidays. Older equipment has been placed in service to increase capacity.

 This week saw the topping off of the Christmas tree at Jaite's Scrap Yard. Always a crowd pleaser!

I also did a little locomotive repair and decoder work but that's not much of anything photogenic.

Kevin,  Thanks for opening the WPF.  Your nifty California Pacific boxcar prompted me learn more about the Cal-P.  Was surprised to find that the Napa Valley Wine Train operates on right-of-way once owned by the Cal-P.

Thanks Peter. My CALIFORNIA PACIFIC is 100% fictional. The real railroad with that names ceased operations in the 1800s. I had no idea any of their right of way would still exist.

.

I got those decals on eBay. They were made by Don Manlick in 1991. I love resurecting defunct custom roadnames. Some of the guys that had custom roadnames really put some thought into the image before they had decals printed. Most did not.

GARRY, The effort you're putting into getting everyone home on time is surely much appreciated by all those tiny passengers.

Ed, That poor tree with a caboose stuck in it? Going to be interesting when those Arctic winds start blowing. But could make for an interesting ride if Disney ever does a ride for The Polar Express.

Harrison, Takes courage to admit, like Ed, you've been up to wiring.

If you' re going to meet snow, you best be equipped. This item is enroute to the oil field for exploration work.

It's a Hot Wheels thing, cost a couple of bucks, then I did some detail painting. May do more. It's awfully heavy...

Casey, as usual, I’m in awe.

 

Garry, what can I say? Plenty to satisfy my CB&Q fix, thank you.

 

Ed, your last photo reminded me of one of Grampys Trainsphotos which had one of Santa’s little helpers in it. DJ has now been absent for over 18 months.

 

Harrison, not only have you been doing wiring but it would appear that you’ve done a fair bit of other really Good Stuff.

 

Peter, the Bears sweet tooth started to itch upon seeing those candy canes.

 

The local geological seismic survey boys have a similar looking vehicle, Mike.

 

Now the Bears offering is not railroad related, it’s about 1/78.5 scale, has the aerodynamic qualities of a brick, is draughty and floats that leak like a sieve, but the Pony Express dropped off a parcel of goodies on Friday, of which it was one goodie. The reason it is so important is that it is the first model making that I’ve done for over nine months, and it was good to blow the cobwebs off the tools and actually use them.

I miss Grampy Trains' contributions, too, Bear. He did some great modeling, mostly PRR, and was a frequent contributor to "Show Me Something".

I did find some motivation last night to get the airbrush filled with some Scalecoat Tuscan Red and proceeded to do a little paint-shop work

Now they sit for a week or two until I continue with the roof and underframe paint.

Happy Weekend...and Holidays,everyone!

Had a couple of days near 60 degrees in the last 2 weeks,so I was able to take the K-28 out back and get some paint on it. Still a lot of touch-up,clear coat,weathering to be done,but the temps have dipped.It may be spring before I finish this up.

It took several acetone baths to clean the grunge shown here:

The first structure for my Stanford and Truckee Railroad layout is complete: the ubiquitious Merchant's Row I.  For my first structure in probably 30 years, it will do for a "three foot" model.

Casey: That locomotive is really beginning to look like a bulky beast. It appears tremendously powerful.
Garry: Your holiday passenger operations are quite a sight. So much to do, so much equipment to do it with!
Ed: Topping the Christmas tree with a giant caboose is so appropriate!
Harrison: I love wiring. Believe it or not, all the skills and knowledge you gain in model railroad wiring can be applicable in so many places later in life. You learn problem solving and logic skills as you go.
Peter: My wife and I both love the candy cane train.
Mike: That Hot Wheels Thing sure looks like a good flatcar load. I hope you post pictures of the final model.
Bear: Glad to have you back with tools in your hands. The plane is sharp.
Ed: Your paint jobs look good.
Middleman: Yours certainly does too!
Mapguy: The row of merchants looks good. I really like the mortar.
