Worst day on the layout?
About 4-5 years ago I was working from home, things got slow and the wifey said "You either need to get a part time job, or a hobby". So I started my layout and got a part time job. The layout was in an old office in the shop, the job turned full time (OTR driver). My wife wanted to help a young couple down on their luck, so we decided to let them stay in the shop (had everything but a kitchen), but the layout had to come down, fortunately it was built in sections so it could be moved. Even though this was explained over the phone, I came home to a fully disassembled layout- sub- roadbed taken off of risers, risers removed from cross joists, removed from outer frame...... Just a stack of individual boards and a can of screws. All I could do is shake my head and open a cold beverage.
Oh well, it wasn't a very good layout any way.

Kev,
There is an old saying. If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!

My layout suffered a similar catastrophe several years ago. We had a "foot massage" sized earthquake but the epicenter was only a few miles away so the layout was bounced pretty hard. As you can see from the photos, very few cars/locos remained upright. Fortunately, only one old AHM tank car fell off the layout!

Yep, I know this too well, but looking back it was a blessing in disguise. I was such a greenhorn, doing everything wrong.
Now I just need to get the time again.

It's tongue-in-cheek (mostly), but on our pike we have training and qualification tests for engineer, conductor and dispatcher. We consider it as adding to the realism. Hmm, my daughter hasn't operated in 20 years, maybe she needs a review class. And the grandkids are still on "learners permits", I should get them through the test.

Horn blower, I always park the expensive stuff at the back of the layout. We get a shake now and then, best to be prudent.
