I am posting this one for a friend as I didn't know the answer either. He is interested in building a live steam model. We had discussed the 1:12 ride on units but for what he is looking at that would be rather large. My question on this is: Are there any plans out there or has anyone built a G-scale (1:24) live steam engine? (I think he is looking at building it for the experience. He is into alternative energy sources.) The type of engine he specially mentioned was the 4-4-0s of Transcontinental Railroad Golden Spike fame. Anything I get from this I will forward to him.

Accucraft makes a 4-4-0 live steam engine, but I am not sure whether it is available as a kit.

There are plans out there, written decades ago by Curly Lawerance, who went by LBSC as his pen name. I cannot remember the names of the books, but he had plans for both O scale and large scale, I think in both 1:32 or gauge one and 16mm which is used for narrow gauge. A google search should turn up the books he wrote. I have a Roundhouse brand G scale live steamer called Bertie.
