Good morning from smoke land. Environment Canada says to expect the smoke to get really bad as outflow conditions will occur early next week. I sure feel bad for those with medical issues that are dealing with it.

Track Fiddler, I am glad you had such a great day with your daughter, I know the feeling of saying goodbye to our kids. My son and I are very close and he is leaving for school Sept 1.

We fly him home at fall break, Christmas and Spring break, but it is nice having him around all the time. We also chat on Facebook throughout the day and video call often, that makes it easier. We have the laptop setup at most Sunday dinners and he joins the conversation while he is doing homework in Ottawa. It is 2100hrs there and 1800hrs here. We usually have the in-laws and my sister and her husband on Sundays and it's good to have him join us.

Track Fiddler, don't know your or her situation, but why don't you hop on a plane and go visit her? You can play tourist when she is at work and she can be tour guide on her days off. Any reason to travel is a good one in my book.

Last year we had planned for me to go to Ottawa when the Vancouver Canucks were in town playing the Senators. The kid and I were going to the game and had some other things planned. The wheels fell off that idea at the last moment, but maybe this year.

The kid dragged me to the golf course yesterday, UGH! is all I can say about my play. Only got one par had not touched a club in two years. Golf is just too painful to play with my bad arthritis, it will take a couple of days to recover but was worth it. Spent a great five hours with the kid and we will try to do it again next week. He was on call for a movie shoot he is doing and we may have had to leave but it didn't happen.Yes We got home at about 1900hrs and my wife had an incredible steak dinner ready for us ten minutes later. Life is good.

We are going to a football game next week barring movie work, if that happens I will take a friend instead.

The kid has three University friends in town and is taking them all out to lunch today to a posh restaurant on the water. Sunday they are coming here for the day before their redeye back to Ontario. The wife will put on a good Prime Rib dinner for them and it will get devoured I'm sure as those kids can eat.

Moe, hope your wife bounces back to normal as soon as possible, My wife has had health issues lately and it sure can change your focus of what is important in life.

As I type the homestead is full of dog people, all here to get grooming lessons from the wife for upcoming shows. The dogs are all from my wife's breeding line and she co-owns them and hopefully, they will do well as my wife's breeding program gets the credit. Days like this I disappear into the trainroom.Laugh

Well, time to get busy.

All the best to all.

I learned on the Facebook "Life with my rescued coonhound" page of a new FAKE.  People make their dogs go outside in the morning before breakfast.  If the dogs aren't in the mood, they do a fake squat or leg lift so they can get fed.  About a dozen people said there dogs fake it.  The rest of us are gobsmacked.

It's hard to work that word into a conversation.

Did some weathering with my airbrush of my turntable.  It was painted a concrete color with no weathering at all.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer and Ulrich, Rick and Steven what they want.

Did some running for and with the Wife. Got her car smog tested that took a whole 3 minutes. Then stopped by Harbor Freight.

Need a light for my storage room and bought this.

 https://www.harborfreight.com/four-head-led-under-cabinet-light-62902.html

I am not impressed, but for $7.99 (20% off coupon) guess it is ok.

All so bought a cheap Saws All

 https://www.harborfreight.com/6-amp-heavy-duty-variable-speed-rotating-handle-reciprocating-saw-61884.html

I got 20% off it as well so for $16.00 I cannot complain.

LMC My wife had full blown Pancreatitis and from what she said it was not fun. Blew chunks daily and did not want to eat. She dropped 30 pounds in around 2 months. 150 pounds looked pretty good to me, her weight when I meet her and at 5' 10" she carried it well! Big Smile But she did not like the way her clothes fitted so she started eating more and got to 170. Sigh Far from being fat at 5' 10" but I would have been happy to buy a few new clothes. Stick out tongue

Credit Card Front Got a small $500.00 increase from Citi Bank. What surprised me was the fact I was declined last week for a increase. Guess a human looked at my record and gave the. Yes

Slowly but surley I am getting to the Good credit score again. Think I need 2 more points.

Trains are running great, so later.

Howdy ..

To compare with my new GP40, here are similar Paducah & Louisville  locomotives in a picture I took in Princeton, KY last winter. ... The lead unit is a road slug mated to the GP40 behind it. The third unit is also a GP40. .....

I called Capitol One about a year ago and asked about an increase because I want to get rid of one of my other cards.

.

They told me the process to apply for an increase, sounded like too much work, so I said to forget it.

Next statement, my limit went up by 200%, so I guess a human got the message.

Evening all just got back from a killer walk with the wife and dogs. Probably did about 10 kilometres.

I took a dead cedar tree down for my neighbour last week and bucked it up. It was only about 10 metres tall so didn't take long. He brought two pretty nice bottles of wine over to thank me. The $40.00 cab sav is going down nicely thank you. I try and help him out as much as I can as he is getting up there in years.

He is a really interesting person to talk to, he is from Taiwan and he has worked as a chemist for Dupont for most of his career and has worked in 43 countries. When he was working in Singapore he developed the paint that Boeing uses on their aircraft and holds part of the patent. Needless to say, he is very well off. I am not sure why he is living next to me.Laugh

He owns fifteen houses in and around Vancouver, he took me to one of them to ask about how to deal with an issue he was having. To say he is frugal is an understatement, but then again he didn't get to where he is by blowing his wad.

Tried hard to get passage on the Amsterdam that is heading to Alaska tomorrow. Maybe next time. We have friends (three couples) going and at the time they booked, we couldn't commit. The kid was hoping to be able to come and eat and sleep the week away.

He is on standby for some reshoots in his current movie and that should be it for the Summer and maybe forever in the movie biz. If it is the end for him, it was the most fun you could ever have making money he says. He made more on one nine-day shoot than his friends made all Summer. He took his buds from Ottawa to lunch today to high end joint and they really had a good time. He still isn't home.

Time to hit the sack so I can do it all over again tomorrow.

Night all.Zzz

Ed and Ulrich .... Your photos have trains that look like they are from Thomas the Tank Engine stories.

Brent .... Your neighbor apparently is well rewarded for his accomplishments.... That is good. .... I recall seeing the big cruise ships when we were in Vancouver. We stayed at the big hotel where they dock. Nice place.

Everybody ........ Happy model railroading !

Garry - there is design and there is good design. Which is which - well, one has to decide that for himself - finally!

For me, this is not good design:

The new generation of Voith Diesel-hydraulic engines.

This is good design- in my eyes:

First post-war mainline Diesel engine.

I love most of the US-built first generation streamlined diesels .

Couldn´t agree more! The covered wagon design of the F´s and E´s still doesn´t look outdated! I also love their NOHAB/Sweden built double-cab counterparts, which ran in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Belgium and Luxemburg.

The postman just delivered my order of streetlights. A pack of ten, made in China, for the price of 1, made in Germany.

There are supposed to look light old gas lights. I think they will look fine on my layout! I have plans to wire them to a cheap lighting computer to simulate the flicker of gas lights.

Happy times!

Brent... Yeah we definitely miss our kids when they're not around so much anymore.

It definitely sounds like your son is on the right track going to school. An education is not only important, it's almost a must with the cost of living these days.

Two of my children got their education right away when they were young. My third one didn't.  It gets harder and harder as you get older to go back to school. Once you get caught up in lifes circle it's tough to go back.

We've been getting some of your Canadian Wildfire haze down here in Minnesota. The air quality quite poor. I can't imagine how bad it is closer to the source.

That prime rib sure sounded good. My mouth starts watering just reading about it. If I can get prime rib along with Bering Sea King Crab in one meal, it's like I died and went to heaven. (Surf'n'Turf)

As far as going and visiting my daughter in China. Not a bad idea but I tend to be a bit territorial. I don't stray too far from the US.

I always enjoy fishing in Canada. The people are so friendly up there. It's just like it was when I lived in Northern Minnesota.

I used to go sit on a beach in Mexico but even that country is getting a little iffy these days.

My daughter set me up with a program on my phone before she left... I'm glad I will be able to communicate and see her on the phone this year.

On the football subject. Go Vikes. I'm heading out to watch another preseason game in my buddies garage today... should be fun.

Take care allWink

Good morning all.

Zoe - A mocha cappuccino and a glazed doughnut or two, please. Thanks.

SteveO - Happy retirement with your new-found fortune! After all, anything endorsed by Black Panther has just got to be legit!

Brent - While we have anti-animal cruelty laws, they don't quite come up to snuff, IMO.

Ulrich - I think that those lights will look good on your layout, and have enjoyed the vids. You make very good looking layouts.

Weather - Humid, and I'm not liking it, nor is my asthma.

W*^k - Had a very "fun" couple of days, and I would swear it was a full moon this week, as all the crazies were out and about.

Crazy #1 - Had a customer trying to photocopy copywriter materials. One item, she had taken a black pen and scribbled across the copyright markings, while item 2 still had a visible copyright. When I said I could not do copywritten items, she pulled a marker out of her purse and blacked out the copyright, and then ordered me to do it. I explained that that is not how copyrights work. I then handed her the release form, and said that, until it was completely filled out by the copyright holder, and no one else, I could not, and would not, be doing her photocopies.

She left in a huff.

Crazy #2 - "What is a 1-subject notebook? It's on my daughters school supply list...."

Enough said about THAT one right there...

My boss asked what in the world was going on, as we had more than our share of crazies, and my response, was, "To quote Plankton from SpongeBob, "I don't understand, is there a gas leak in here?""

Both him, and the tech supervisor got a huge kick out of that one!

Start the "new" job in 9 days.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

I am afraid you were wrong in this case. It is perfectly legal to photocopy copyrighted material for private use, but only for private use. Any public or commercial use, however, is prohibited.

Ulrich - The company I am employed by, has a very strict rule about copyrights.

That rule is, if any employee photocopies any copywritten material without a written copyright release from the copyright holder, no matter what the use is for, it is a automatic termination of employment.

They have had one too many lawsuits brought against them over "fair-use" of copywritten materials, and these have cost money to defend. (Even if the company wins, the attorney's need paid. And if they lose, it costs even more.) So, they now operate on the "cover our own behind" policy of simply not doing copywritten materials without a written release first.

(One case, as an example, was where the copyright holder sued over the fact that the company I work for had made a profit from printing the copywritten materials. It was argued that, the only one allowed to profit from it was the copyright holder.)

Her order, amounting to under $2.00, simply was not worth my losing my employment over.

And, the fact that she had attempted to disguise the copyrights threw up way too many red-flags. Even without the company's rule, I most likely would have refused, until it could be explained why she was deliberately trying to hide the copyrights.

So, while I know that copyrights prevent anything other than fair-use by a individual, my hands were very tied by the rules of my employer, and by the questions surrounding the customers actions.

Even photographs taken by yourself, If they "appear professional" in appearance, must include a written release to authorize me to print them.

While I don't make these rules, I am under full obligation to follow them.

I did inform the customer of this, but the fact that she attempted to circumvent the rules by blocking out the copyright is what made me classify it as a crazy.

After all, if only you were intending to only use it for yourself, why try to hide the copyrights?

Medical education, as I knew it, wouldn't have existed without a Xerox machine.

That said, the US has more attorneys than the rest of the world.

Need to do a little more painting on my turntable.  The "pond" I touched up with green tinted podge to cover the blue and it's the wrong shade.  I did start using a hair drier on it right away and it dried in a couple hours, even faster than a test piece I put out in the sun.

Ummmm....

.

The Union Pacific M-10000 (you need another zero) is beautiful.

.

If the eighty year old styling is lost on you, that is too bad. Please read some books on industrial design from the 20s-40s and see how amazing this time period was. The M-10000 was not the only work of art on the rails during these decades.

Good morning from smokeland.

I was out doing yard work and suddenly realized I was coughing a lot. I guess being out in the smoke-filled air was having a bigger effect on me than I thought it would.

Garry, is this the place?

It is a beautiful hotel/cruise ship facility. I used to meet my buddy/stockbroker there for drinks in the lounge often. The view is tremendous. The Rum and Cokes perfect.Laugh

Steven, if the job situation in Louisiana is not great, you need to get your butt up to Whistler B.C. They are 14000 workers short for the upcoming ski season. Good pay and long hours for a year will get you in good step financially.

Also, with the price of oil creeping up, the Alberta oil patch is hiring big time once again. The trick is you work such long hours while making outrages amounts of money that you don't have time to spend any of it, just invest it.

I only have high school and live very well because that is how I did it. Don't languish in hope too long, go where the work is. Go spend a year in the oil patch and come home with $150,000.00 in your pocket.

Well, the wife has just drove in with a carload of groceries, so by for now.
