70's BB loco replacement wheelsets
Posted by saronaterry on Sunday, July 8, 2018 11:15 AM

I'v e tried sending an E-mail to Athearn/Horizon. I'm looking for NS wheelsets to , hopefully, drop right in like the the newer BB. The locos I have already have had decoders installed and run great, but I'd like to upgrade the sintered to NS. I have used newer  sets( part#40028/29) that I pulled apart and put on the drive gear. Works, but is kind of a PITA. That does give me extra gearsets for my Proto geeps, though! LOL!

The original part # is 40023, Drive wheel assembly.

Any help?

Thanks!

That was a bit overwhelming for an old guy like me.It'll take me a bit to make sure what's  what. Saved the site, though!

Here's the ones I used on my SW7,SW1500 and GP38-2 DCC upgrade. These drop into the gear box.

Thanks, Larry.

That is what I use  for my newer BB engines with the plastic sideframes also. The engines I'm talking about have the metal sideframes. The wheelsets have a fiull length plastic gear, no brass" bearing blocks". They are early 70's, 1974 to  be exact. I twisted off the sintered wheels and pushed  on the NS ones I had.

I am hoping there is a just- as- easy drop -in wheel/axle/gear set as those.

I replaced wheel sets on Life Like Proto 1000 F3's becasue of cracked gears. The Proto wheels were still good, and I put them with the half axles on some Athearn blue box Baldwin switchers.

Conclusion: ... Life Like Proto wheels do work on older Athearn models.
