Thanks for the welcome. I haven't spent to much time over here before. I had an account and didn't even remember signing up for it. Must have did it when the Atlas forum was down for the summer.

QUOTE: Whats the point of having a forum if you keep shuting it down?

It's not exactly like they 'keep shutting it down'. They normally close for a couple of weeks in the summer and a week or so at Xmas so the people who are involved in administering/monitoring it can have time off. This summer it was down a long time as they changed the forum software. This time they have simply locked the threads from additional posting. But the forum is open for reading all the threads and posts.

The Atlas forum is probably the most active of all the model railroading forums, so all the others usually see a temporary, but noticeable, influx of people who are looking for another forum to hang out at until Atlas comes back up. This year it is scheduled to come back on Jan 4th.

Regards

Ed

I check out all of the major forums and Atlas is the only one (to my knowledge) that closes for summer and the holidays. Why is it that they have to close and the others don't?

Merry Christmas!

I suspect in part it's the amount of human resources that they allocate to police it.

I think one of the reasons that the Atlas Forum is shut down on the holidays is because there is nobody there to "Police" it on the holidays. I visit the Atlas forum often. I remember an occasion not to long ago when there was a topic about a company with "questionable practices" named Pacific Western Rails. The topic quickly got out of hand as there were many, many people slamming them. At ther same time this was happening, everyone from Atlas was gone for a few days attending one of the larger train shows. As i said, the topic quickly got out of hand and many people were explaining their bad experiences with Pacific Western Rails in the past. It got pretty interesting when the president on this company came on the forum possing as someone else and tried to defend his own company. He was quickly found out to be the president and it just went from bad to ugly.

As soon as Atlas came back from the show, they locked up the topic.
