I will be spending a couple of weeks in Mrytle Beach,SC in early Feb. Can anyone recommend a Model Railroad shop in the area?
Thank You
Dave
My parents took me there in 1958, where I saw my first Holliday Inn and dirt track racing. The speedway is still there and there is 3 days of racing in Feb. You may have to go to Charleston to find a decent train store.

Well, I just did a quick search, and found

Located above Ed's Hobby Shop in down town, Myrtel Beach. Maybe check it out. They might be able to direct you to more shops in the area.

Thank you. My wife found a hobby shop, probably Ed's, the club sounds interesting.
There is nothing in Charleston for model railroading. They have 2 Hobbytown USA's but have very little model railroad stuff unless your a Lionel fan and like paying MSRP. In Darlington, the is a store Bandit Hobbies that had a good selection of model railroad stuff. In West Columbia, there is Brookland Hobby which is loaded with model railroad stuff. It's a very small building with enough train stuff to fill a grocery store.
I live in the Myrtle Beach area. The Grand Strand club is no longer above Ed's Hobby and has not been for several years. In can be found at Myrtle Beach Mall near the Bass Pro Shop, located at the north end of town on Rt. 17. Ed's is strictly RC models - nothing RR related. There are no train shops in the immediate area. Best possibilities are on the western part of the state, Wilmington NC and the Charleston area.

I would say that this is the best answer. Thank you.
Since you are coming from so far away, and since you will be there for two weeks, I STRONGLY suggest you make a Saturday trip to Wilson, North Carolina, and visit the Antique Barm Model Train Shop. The train layout is open to the public on Saturdays, you might want to check into the exact times. That alone is woth the trip.

It is about a 3.5 hour drive, but make the day of it and try a few good eats along the way.
The Antique Barn Train Shop is huge, with nearly everything you can imagine.

If you are planning a visit to Brookland Hobbies, go on an extreme diet first! Like Willy said, they have enough stock to fill a grocery store. There is barely enough room to turn around.
Great store to visit. Don't be in a hurry while you are in there.

Sorry to say, The Antique Barn closed in Dec.
A big loss the local modelling community. The club is looking for a place to relocate.

Oh No!
That is terrible news. I am going to be in Rocky Mount, NC for work in March, and I was looking so forward to visiting that store again.
I spent close to $300.00 in there last year on my visit, and only bought about 1/3 of what they had that I wanted. It was a great place, so sad.
The owner - a really nice guy - was getting up there and told me at the Raleigh train show that it wasn't worthwhile trying to compete with internet sales.
I live in North Myrtle and can confirm the previous post that there is not a model train store in or close to Myrtle Beach. Ed's Hobbies on Rt. 501 in "downtown" Myrtle Beach centers on remote control things, but I do go there for paint, glue and wood sometimes. Once when I asked the clerk loudly replied "We don't have any trains!" Since then, though, a shelf or two of primarily HO items has appeared in the back left of the store. There is usually a dozen or so old Athearn blue box kits or older Walthers kits... as if from an estate sale. So if you are passing by right there, it might be worth a look.
I do like to see the model items, and I tend to save my pennies and make a big trek to a big show. The model RR clubs near Myrtle Beach host a train show in December that isn't bad - picked up some cheap Shinohara turnouts last time.
Enjoy your visit to the beach. It has been cold here by our standards, but it still feels like summer when we go out to dance the Carolina Shag. (The water tower of North Myrtle Beach bears the logo Home of the Shag.)
