I frequently look up information in older postings on the various MR forums. I recently noticed that virtually all (some exceptions) the photos which accompanied these postings have been deleted by Photobucket. I would think that they would not go to the extent of editing the past, given their new cost-based upgrade requirements for those with Photobucket accounts. Very sad

When the Photobucket Fiasco hit back in July, I simply stopped uploading photos but I left everything as-is, in-situ, as far as my account status.
I'm not sure if Photobucket deleted anyone's photos (all of mine are are still there) however, I believe many disgruntled users closed their accounts and removed all of their photos from the site.
As of early November my account reverted back to "free" status but all my photos are still accessable. Still, I completely agree with you that many threads are now showing the "tachometer" placeholder and tons of good information is lost.
Maybe others have a different experience.

The 'Photobucket Fiasco' has nothing to do with uploading or storage of photos; it is solely concerned with 'hotlinking' of their stored photos to other sites (which, unfortunately, is what most of its users on this forum needed it for). I believe if you provide only the URL to the stored image in a post, you will still see it ... but you can't use the helpful image tool in the forum interface to make it automatically display.
I sympathize a little with the Photobucket management about wanting to control the extent of hotlinking -- quite a few sites actively prohibit the practice and some put up admonitory messages verging on downright rude if you try it. But the idea of putting up their cute little placeholder even for hobbyist users of a railroad forum is ... well, look at the reputation they now have.
The unfortunate thing is that too many people just wash their hands of the disaster and don't bother to find another host and change the link in their post content. I don't blame them; it's just a shame there's no way to see the content any more.

When someone brings up an older thread that I posted a photo in, I will fix the photo image....but I'm not about to go thru close to 7,000 posts to do that.
Although I closed My Photo bucket account, they still send Me advertising and say they will give Me a special deal to come back......leads Me to believe that the decision they made was in haste and they are losing $$$...but that's just My opinion. I'll stay with Imgur until they change......I can't lose anything....photos are stored in My hard drive with back-up.
Take Care!

Perhaps not. I only refered to it as the "Photobucket Fiasco" because they made an abrupt change without prior notification which left the majority of their users without any alternative.
I did not intend to upset anyone here by my description of how Photobucket chose to enforce their policy change.

It is the method I used to post the "hot link" to the photo shown in my original reply. Still works was my point.
