HELP Disassembly/Shell Removal of Proto 2000 2-10-2?
Posted by Trainman440 on Monday, December 25, 2017 11:29 AM

Hello all:

Merry Christmas!
Anyone know how to take apart a Proto 2000 2-10-2?

When I bought mine off Ebay, front headlight didn't turn on, and Ive checked the wiring and the decoder, it must be something inside the engine that's causing the problem.

An exploded diagram would help too!

Thanks!

Charles

Charles,

Check to see if the front boiler plate will pull off.  Some boiler plates are press fit into the boiler and can be removed with some careful prying.  I know my BLI locomotives are like that and the front headlight lens on my Proto 2000 0-8-0 is removable.

I had to replace the LED in mine, too.

Good luck, it is a pretty involved procedure. You practically have to strip the locomotive down to barer-bones.

I had a diagram but it is lost somewhere in my Photobucket archive.

There is a hidden screw under the steam dome you have to get to.

I don't have time at the moment but I'll get back to this thread later this evening.

Cheers, Merry Christmas,

Ed

tstage - the headlight is lit via a clear pastic light tube(?) thing that directs an LED thats housed far inside the loco to the headlight. Not as easy as it looks.
gmpullman - thanks!

Nevermind! I found out the hard way.

I just took every screw I saw apart and it all came apart.

That said, for anyone else who is also trying to find this info this is how:

Remove the Steam dome(the small dome between the larger ones)

Remove the screw under the steam dome.

Pry outwards and remove the cab.

Push the upper half of the boiler up and out of the chassis

Remove the 2 screws holding the 2 halves of the weight to get to the motor/light.

DONE

Charles
