Good evening from cloudy and mild Northeast Ohio.
Managed to finish one car this week!
This is a car I built for the Railroad Clubs Christmas Gift Exchange. Athearn PS 5344CF Boxcar Kit, with added Plano Walkover Platform and A-Line Sill Steps in place of the plastic ones. Painted the car with Scalecoat II Armour Yellow and Floquil Platinum Mist Paints, then decalled with Oddballs Decals. The KCS picked these cars up in 1987 from one of the shortlines that had too many, and instead of painting it in their rust color left in the the yellow that the cars were originally painted and lettered with green graphics.
In progress car, Athearn PC&F 50' RBL with a 12' Door, car will be either SSW, SP or WP depending on the decal I can find.
Also worked on a GP7 for the D&TSL railroad, but the picture was damaged, may try it later this week.

I also finished one car this week. It is an N scale STRATTON & GILLETTE boxcar. This is probably the first N scale car I have completed in 20 years. It is so tiny!
This one is destined for the store layout in Riverdale Station in Atlanta, Georgia. It will be there next week on their store layout.

Another weekend — another month!
Thanks for starting things off, Rick. More fantastic rolling stock for your roster! The underbody detail looks amazing on your RBL!
Your's, too, Kevin. N scale to boot Decal work gets tedious for me. I have to do it in small batches then take a break for a while.
Penn Central's covered hopper is realism at it's finest. How did you do those scribblings? How many thousands of cars have I seen out on the main line like that. Neat stuff!
Have you seen the new Penn-Central C-R patch out GP9s coming from Athearn? For some modelers (that don't have your talent) they will be a real advantage for those who want some grubby looking equipment.

I'm glad to see manufacturers offering such fare for a change.
Some of the things I kept busy with this week don't photograph very well, such as downloading new sound projects for some of my Loksound locomotives.
I did manage to replace six lamp poles at one of the longer platforms at Union Station and I also photographed the Walthers 3-2 observation car that I finished up this week, both projects in one scene

My modest contribution for the week. The conductor is inside Durango station, waiting for some final waybills, but the train is otherwise ready for its power and departure for Silverton.

Ed - your pics of life at a train station are more than believable. The scribbles on the hopper were done with a watercolor pencil, I kept it sharp with a piece of sandpaper. Thanks for pointing out the loco. As tempting as they are, I have enough un-completed locos and rolling stock to keep me busy.

After painting and decalling that tiny thing, I can't believe I modelled in N scale for more than ten years. I even built 4 or 5 N scale layouts. Crazy.

Ed, Your night station scenes and depiction of the bygone glory days of railroad passenger service are captivating to say the least. Makes me think of those intriguing Hitchcock movies, like North by Northwest and the 20th Century Limited.
Garry, Ah yes, seemingly carefree childhood, the fun of assembling a balsa wood and paper kite, attaching the cloth tail, and then the absolute thrill of flying it.
Have yet to get a handle on fading with paint washes, so tried working over this Exactrail RTR hopper with mostly Pan Pastels.

A couple of weeks ago I posted some images of the holiday layout Boothbay Railway Village brought back to LL Bean store in Freeport Me. What I did not mention was a reporter from a local TV station spent the evening with us while we were setting up. The video was posted on their site Friday

HO-Velo PennCentral, I like your covered hopper and photo composition. May I ask if you apply an initial fade before adding other weathering effects, and if so, your medium of choice?
Peter - I apply fades (sometimes several layers) before beginning the weathering. To fade the initial color, I use thinned acrylics.
This hopper is an older Athearn Blue Box I grabbed on ebay for $9. Since the color of the proto appeared to be a faded turquoise, this was almost an entire re-coloring from the original green. This faded color was shot with an air brush. Once I got the base color/fade down, I sealed it before weathering.
The weathering on this hopper started with thinned oils that were brushed on, this gave the fade a dirty look. After the oil dried, chalks were added to give it some grime and dirt.
I like the looks of your open hopper, and the ADN boxcar behind it.

In preparation for my 12 x 14 HOn3 RGS First District (whose construction will coincide with my retirement from the Air Force after 22 1/2 years) I built a 1' x 3' test module using a scrap of Styrofoam, a piece of ME code 70 flex, and some old N scale roadbed I had leftover. The N scale roadbed works great and is still probably better than the real roadbed profile of the RGS, LOL.

I think share your favorite railroad tree ornament would be a good idea for a new thread. Tis the Season. I have one and I'm sure many other forum members have one too. I would start it but I wouldn't feel right skating in on your thing.
