Proto frames and drives
Posted by gondola1988 on Monday, September 25, 2017 12:31 PM

Just a simple question do Atheran shells fit Proto frames or is there some work to make them fit, or is there other makes that do fit thanks. I'm looking to use an Proto sd45 frame for my project.Jim.

In general, I would say no. The way the shells are fastened  is different for the SD45s, one example that comes to mind. Which is not to say that they might not be able to be adapted, just that its not a drop-in deal if it works.

You mentioned drives in your headline...the P2K SD45 has an odd gearing that doesn't run well with many others, just so you're aware.

When Protopower did their CF7 shells, one was supposed to mill down the corresponding Athearn BB F7 frame in order for the shell to fit correctly.  If memory serves me correctly, Proto eventually offered the correct frames; milled at first, then cast.  I have examples of both.  My stock of Protopower CF7 kits became obsolete when Athearn produced them in their RTR line.

Remember the tin can; the MKT's central Texas branch...
