Custom Painting- Who Will Do It?
Posted by JamesNWR05 on Sunday, September 3, 2017 10:12 AM

I have a problem.

Some of you know I collect/model HO scale engines based on thomas and friends. I have been looking into purchasing this engine from Bachmann -

http://shop.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=258_259_261&products_id=6404

However, for some reason the factory-produced livery given to that model is not accurate to that engine's on-screen portrayal:

Therefore, if and when I purchase this engine I want it to be in the livery above for accuracy's sake. Does anyone know of a company/individual/etc based in the US who I could send the model to and have it painted in the proper colors, lettering and all? It would be hugely helpful. Thank you in advance!

Have you checked the ad section in the back of MR?  There's gotta be someone who does custom painting.

I never do custom painting for others, I have to much to do for myself just working on the STRATTON & GILLETTE roster project.

.

However, I am wondering wht Bachmann altered the paint scheme so badly on that locomotive. The correct paint scheme is pleasing enough, but the alternate scheme they used seems garish.

.

Was this a special release? Are you sure it is not available in the correct colors?

Should've clarified. The pink coloring was a previous livery. The cherry red is a new revamp in an effort to reinvigorate an obsolete character trait (pink=a girl's color, the engine is 'female')

Custom painters are going the way of the phone booth. Most painters were about doing brass and in the last decade and now most locos are coming with factory paint and well done to boot. There is still a need as someone will want changes, but good luck in finding someone to do this today.....at least for a fair price.

There is still plenty of used unpainted brass on the market, but most are now acquired at greatly reduced prices. Many times the custom paint work will exceed the cost of the model equating to economics that many times do not work well.

I quit custom painting for others years back with the onslaught of Korean models as they would come apart OK, but not go back together at all well. Japanese brass models did not have all of the whistles and bells of the newer Korean imports, but most were made of great quality and could be completely disassembled and put back together without a problem. Custom painting like most services are cost of labor based and when considerably more time is needed to complete a job for an almost established price......it comes time to re-evaluate what you are doing.

Still there are a few really good experts in the field. I could mention them, but the editor/moderator may look at this as a plug, so if it is a recommedation that is needed, please free to contact me.

Since Bachmann's site shows the pink version as available, I'm guessing that the version you want yours to be painted is the second one which you show.  If it's a more recent make-over of the original (from the TV series), I'd guess that Bachmann will eventually offer it.
It doesn't look like it would be all that complicated to do, as it's only the main body of the loco and the cylinders that need to be repainted.  The running gear wouldn't need to be touched.

That makes perfect sense.

.

I think Wayne gave good advice. Bachmann will probably release the model with the new scheme at some point.

.

If you already have the model, why not give it a try yourself? The striping sould be easy to get from other decals sets, and from what I have seen, none of it is curved.

Expert painter - David Long of Kelly Creek Backshop in Bozeman, Montana.  Former NW Shortline employee who can also regear and rebuild.  $50 per hour, no joke, that is current rate.  I have a brass engine there now.  Top quality as good or better than factory paint.  Phone 406-585-0024.
