Interesting-Looking HO/OO British Locos
Posted by JamesNWR05 on Thursday, July 27, 2017 5:17 PM

Hi-

Was hoping I could pick you guys' brains for some ideas for the next loco I start saving for. Obviously the title specifies that I'm looking for British lcos, preferably steam but I'm open to diesels, anything I'll be able to easily find on ehattons.com is good for me. Hope all the American fans on here can help me out ;-) Thanks

How about a DJH kit? http://www.djhmodelloco.co.uk/oo-gauge-list/

The kits are usually made without the wheels and motor, so you have to add those for a complete model: http://www.djhmodelloco.co.uk/accessories/

Well, my vote for cool British engines would be the Black 5's and the large Decapods. I think Hornby makes an OO or HO Black 5. I don't know about the Dec.

How about a BR Standard  3MT 2-6-2T? Nice looking small engine suitable for both branch line freight and passenger services?

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.

I like this one

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Bachmann Branchline makes the BR Standard 9F 2-10-0.

What are you trying to accomplish with this? You're all over the place on era, engine size, and region.

Uh, nothing in particular. why restrict myself to one time period or size, or area? Why can't I just enjoy the engines I enjoy?

Great Britain has a very active steam locomotive enthusiast scene and there is hardly a weekend without a steam festival somewhere in the country. You will find steam engines of any period and any railway in just about any livery, so my best advice is to buy what you like and enjoy it. You can´t be wrong!

My peronal favourite would be this beauty from Bachmann:

Oh.  I don't know. Just thought you might want to model some aspect of the British scene in some specific period, region, and  location. Like, say, Cornwall in the mid to late 50's with an emphasis on China clay traffic. Or coal traffic out of southern Wales just prior to the dieselization of the Western Region.

Just a thought.

I'm staying really open-minded for the time being and just focusing on what makes me happiest. Perhaps for my next layout I'll be more centered on realism. We'll see!
