Wet behind the ears

I recently received an N gauge layout (in storage after family member passed away).

I'm totally new...fortunately, one of the Model Railroader books has the exact layout.

I had some track that was bowing a bit (looked like it was mated up with the ends not squared off). Peeled it up....have some dings in the styrofoam base, I'm going to smooth them over with drywall compound....will that work?[?]

Half the layout was complete, the other half only has the track. Much of the cork is stiff, gouged out. I'm replacing all that for the track that has been peeled up.[:(]

Currently reading like mad....don't know a GP-38 from a Steam Engine....is there light at the end of the tunnel?[:)]

Yes. I've used premixed lightweight spackle compound. Sand it afterwards to be sure you don't leave any ridges that would cause your cork roadbed to be uneven.

Reading all you can find (magazines, books, forums) is the best way (in my mind) to quickly get an idea what's going on. While I can tell a GP-38 from a steam loco, I can't actually recognize it as a GP-38 without my Diesel Spotter's Guide. To me all diseasels look alike.
