Locomotive Coupler Question:)
Posted by Joshua Niederkohr on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 6:41 PM

I just got this locomotive from the Blissfield Model Railroad Club in Blissfield, Michigan. It's Norfolk & Western 2557, and my issue is withthe couplers. Their at the right height, but they are horn hook, and I want them to be Kadee. Which Kadee should I use, I know it has to be bigger than a Kadee #5. What sizes are there from Kadee bigger than #5 that would be a great replacement. The horn hooks are mounted to the wheelsets, I know how I'm going to remove them completely. Thanks for all repsonses. Thumbs Up

Welcome to the forums.

Go to the Kadee home page and find "conversions".  There they list most, if not all, rolling stock, including locomotives.  You do need to know the make and model.  It also gives you information on any modifications you may need to make, such as adding shims or cutting something back.

Good luck,

Richard

Just a guess but the loco might be a GP18 by AHM. Norfolk & Western 2557. The Kadee #21 is recommended from the Kadee list.

If you are not sure. post a picture.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.

You definitly want to check the Kadee "what-fits-what" list when looking for couplers to fit locomotives.  It has never failed to have an entry for any piece of rolling stock I ever tried.  It will probably recommend a non-conductive (plastic) coupler from the 30 series, if memory serves.  If it recomends some oddball that your local hobby shop doesn't have, it's worth the trouble to order the recommended coupler.  Although it is possible to warp a No. 5 Kadee into anything, the required hacking, filing, shimming, and cussing can be awfully high.

Along with what Rich posted, rrpictures has an NW RS3 (Alco), but the only RS I could find by AHM, is an RS2.  I also found the GP 18.

Kadee does have conversions, with instructions, on it's site for the GP18 and the Alco.

Of course, just guessing it's an AHM.

If you can post a picture, as Rich suggest, show the underside of the loco, as well.

Mike.
