Just introducing myself
Posted by decodancer on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 6:50 PM

I'm not new to model railroading.  I had a nice N scale New Haven layout when I was in my 20s.  I even joined the local train club.  Had to admit I was a bit put off when the application asked for my wifes name.  Guess a female modeler was a bit of a novelty.  Maybe it still is but 30 years later I'm ready to get back into the hobby.  A friend of a friend set me up with a pair of N scale Altas New York Central Locomotives, 8 cars and an oval of Kato unitrack.  What an improvement over the old stuff, I can barely see the track nails nowdays even with my reading glasses.   As an artist, I enjoy the scenery building most of all.  My current project is an 3x6 outdoor (three sides closed in with a plexiglass front and under a roof)  layout for the campground where I work.  The setup in on wheels and will be painted like a vintage train station.  I'd like to set it up where the kids can run the trains without being able to adjust speed or touch anything on the layout.  I have about 50 Liberty Falls ceramic buildings that I plan to adapt and use.  The scale is almost perfect and they will work for my Pocono mountain tourist town.  I'm including a model of the campground as well with buildings and sheds I made from cardboard.  Haven't researched how to ad a photo but will do so asap.  I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as I need to have it running by Memorial Day weekend.  Look forward to getting to know everybody, Kathleen

Wow, no welcomes yet from da guyz in da corners? Indifferent

Ok, let me offer what will hopefully be the first of many welcomes, decodancer.

Welcome

In order to post an image, you must let the server here retrieve it from a host site such as photobucket, imgur, or whatever. So, I'm sure you already have a gallery or three on such sites.  Simply copy the URL of the full-screen/full-sized image you wish to have appear here, and paste that URL into a text reply box.

Welcome back to the World's Greatest Hobby.

Welcome to the group, Kathleen.  This sounds like a very interesting project.  I'm sure you'll get all the help you need in here, lots of great people.

I'm looking forward to your progress and photos.  There is a "sticky note" at the begining of the General Discussion on posting photos.

Mike.

Kathleen,

As a NYC fan, you have a good friend of a friend. YesBig Smile  And welcome to the forum!

Is there a particular era that you are interested in modeling with your 3 x 6' project?

Tom

Thank you all for the warm welcome.  My vision is to model the Dirty Dancing (50s?) era when all the New Yorkers made trips to the Poconos.  Other than a few late model cars which I'll sneak in to inconspicous places, I can pretty much meet my goal.  The main reason I'm doing the oudoor layout is because I live in a 31 foot motorhome and needless to say there is very little space that is not deligated to everyday living.  I'll see if I can figure out the photo thing and post what I've gotten done so far.

Hey Kathleen!

Welcome to the forums!!!   Welcome

Sorry about the non-gender neutral application form. That is a mistake that is made too often, although I'm sure no offense was meant.

Your portable layout project sounds very interesting and I'm sure it will be a hit with the kids, and probably more than a few adults too!

Posting pictures is a bit convoluted but once you have done it a couple of times it becomes easy. If you have trouble just ask and we will be happy to walk you through. Here is a link to the procedure if you haven't found it yet:

We are eager to see your work!

Cheers!!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Kathleen

Welcome to the hobby and MRR. I would like to invite you to join us in Jeffries Diner where we talk about RR, everyday stuff within forum rules and sometimes just sit a spell and listen. Come on over and the first Coffee of joe is on me. Hope to see you there.
