Help identifying a loco and chasis dissembling
Posted by LEOFUTURE on Thursday, March 23, 2017 4:11 PM

still a newbie. Any help will be highly appreaciated!

Part 1: Help identifying a loco and to remove truck from frame

Could someone identify this loco? It says made in Macau, I wonder how should I remove the truck. I tried to look up a few model power ones on hoseeker but they don't look similar. Any help will be highly appreaciated!

Part 2: bachmann steam engine w/ split frame, trying to dissemble the frame to see if the motor is bad (doesn't run) but after removing all screws, I can only pray it open a little bit, it is a 2-8-0 reading 2019.

Part 3 try to dissemble a p2k truck since it makes bang bang bang when moving, but broke the holder below, anyway to pry open safely and quick ways to hold the wheels?

Any help will be highly appreaciated!

The first photo might be a Roco diesel, but I can't help beyond that. I'm no help on the steam engine. As far as the Proto 2000, using a small flat blade screw driver, I carefully pry one end of the cover off, then go to the other end and pry it off.  I've rebuilt dozens of these trucks and only broke one cover. Just take your time and pry by twisting the screw driver.

Bachmann steam, check out the exploded parts diagram on the bachmann website.  It appears from your photo the wheelsets are out of quarter, which is likely the cause of non-running.  Are all of these HO scale?  It also appears that there is some things missing from the 2-8-0, more on that later.

The bottom cover on P2K trucks is held on by 4 tabs, 2 on each side, one pair at the front and one pair at the rear. You can see where it is on the unbroken part in the upper left of the truck, there is a notch. That is the clip on the cover going over the tab on the truck frame. I slide a small screwdriver in from the front or back and lightly press to the side at the clip to release it, repeat for the back, doing the same side. Once one side is off, the other side and the whole cover will come off easily.

If the loco rolls with a thump thump thump, you probably have crached gears. Athearn part 60024, SD40-2 replacement gears are the ones you use with the Proto locos.

Thanks! Yes all HO. I was able to remove tab from the P2K. I still dissemble remove the truck from the first diesel (Roco maybe). I dissembled the bachmann but the motor is pancake, I heard you can fit in a can motor and use pancake as a gear housing. sounds like a lot of work, is it worth it?

That first one, I can't see from the pictures how it comes apart, but I do see it has very deep flanges. It will probbaly work on Code 100 track, but I dount it will run properly on Code 83.

Here is how to take it apart:

The first diesel is a play art or model power depending on when it was made. It actually has a lot of parts from the BSchumann diesels.   I'm assuming you want to disassemble the truck to either get it the gears or the electrical connections. In that case you need just need to take the truck bottoms off. I believe they pry with a small screwdriver usually best from the part of the truck near the center of the engine. The truck bottom is one piece and just clips on.

The Bachmann steam engines of this vintage had problems with the plastic gears cracking and the drivers slipping in the gears that's likely what is happened here.  Good replacement parts are hard to find. Before I did anything with the motor I would be sure I had a solution for the driver issue.

The P2K truck bottoms just clip on but you have to pry from the side to get them off. You pry from one and then the other on one side. It's a little tricky but want to get the knack it fairly easy.

Good luck

So many trains, so little time,
