Hobby stores?
Posted by Razorclaw on Saturday, December 11, 2004 9:27 PM
Can ya'll tell me where are some of the best places to get model railroad parts, stuff and add-ons in the states of Texas, Arkansas and Missiouri? Also any good websites would also be of help. Thanks, Stephen

Just think it could be worse.

If North Texas (DFW area) is not too far out of your way, try Discount Model Trains, 4641 Ratliff Lane in Addison. This is a no-frills train store. By no frills, I mean you will find tall shelves packed with kits, narrow aisles (more space for trains), and just about everything imaginable for TRAINS -- no planes, no slot cars, no silly toys unless you consider the scale you don't use as toys.

Two very nice things you'll find at DMT. First, most items are discounted about 40% from MSRP -- including things they have to order for you. The second is that all kits are opened when they arrive from the vendor. The box cover is then turned upside down and the box put inside. Then the whole thing is shrink wrapped. You can see what the kit looks like without opening the box and you're sure nobody else has either so you can be a bit more confident that all of the parts are there.

If you go to DMT by the way, don't be put off by the light industrial look of the area. You're in the right place. Ratliff Lane is only about 1000' feet long (off Addison Road) and comes to a dead end rather than crossing the Addison Airport taxi ways.

Just to keep the record straight: the Discount Model Trains I recommended and the www.discounttrainsonline.com recommended by JPM335 are NOT the same business. The latter is a web site with a California address.

Noticed you didn't mention Oklahoma!!! If you're ever in town, Oklahoma City has two excellent shops, Whistle Stop Trains, and Woodward's Hobbies. Both of them have very knowledgeable people, and a wide selection. If you're here on a weekend, Woodward's usually has some members from the local train club working at the train desk. You might also try Tony's train exchange online.

Good Luck,
Okie Greg
