Interchangability of Stewart chassis: S-12 switcher
Posted by tstage on Monday, September 5, 2016 12:31 AM

Just curious.  Does anyone know or can they confirm whether a Stewart S-12 shell will fit on another Stewart chassis - e.g. a VO-660?  The sound chassis at the top of this page seems to indicate that.

The reason for asking is that I have an extra VO-660 laying around and would like to add an S-12 switcher to my roster.  I've seen S-12 shells listed on eBay and that could be a good economical option for me.  The trucks also appear to be identical to the VO-660s.

Thanks for the help!

Tom

You may be in luck. Check the Bowser web page:

Baldwin VO-660, S-8, S-12, DS 4-4-1000
#691-1218 Powered $199.95 each

Same item is the repalcement sound chasses for all those. The VO1000 is a different part number. That would sya to me that an S12 body will fit on the VO660 chassis no problems.

Some prototype info to back up Bowser's design: The VO1000 had a 25'6" truck center to center wheelbase, all the others after the VO1000 that Bowser makes moels of has 22'6" wheelbases. VO1000 was 3 feet longer overall, as well. All the rest - pretty much the same. Truck spacing is the key though, VO660, S8, S12, DS4-4-1000 NA and SC all had that same truck spacing, which differed fromt he VO1000.

There is some comparison of models on the Baldwin Diesel Zone web site. http://baldwindiesels.railfan.net/contents.html Pretty cool site if you like Baldwin diesel locos.
