Rock island transfer cabosse and flat car project
Posted by fourt on Monday, June 13, 2016 1:13 AM

I had so much fun planing on how to do the transfer cabosse, that i decided to do them first, instead of the locomotives. So i have started on one cabosse and two flat cars. The caboose will look something like this.

http://rr-fallenflags.org/ri/ri19120abp.jpg

Was working on the sides of the caboose, and have cut them to size. Stupid me glued the two sides to the body, and i had forgot to cut out the windows!! Will have to see if i can cut them or maybe have to pry the sides off.

One of the flat cars just needs some detail parts put on it, the other i have to make the side, decks, end bulk ends yet. Will post some pictures when i get a chance.

There was an article about scratchbuilding this same car in the August 1959 MR, if you have access to the MR Digital Archive. One problem with forums is it's sometimes hard to tell how much the poster wants to do things with any commitent, but if it's there, the resource is available.

Dont have access to that. However i did find a low quality scan of what might be that article.

Have the box built windows, doors cut out, and some detailing done on it, have not started on the roof as i want to paint the inside, and put the window glass in. Worked on teh second flat car got the sides gluged on, and some under boby work done. The car sits too high right now have to file down the bosters. So they are coing along just fine. All the pictures i am finding online is a slightey differnt style then the one i am doing.

Fourt,

I have sent a private message,  e-mail me.

I can help with pictures, other RI info, and another article.

Having said this the RI had a few transfer cabooses in several batches with some variations.  I saw this type of caboose frequently living in Peoria.  You may notice my avatar is the RI logo.  It is a roof support from the Rock Island RR station in downtown Peoria, Illinois.  Sorry I'm so brief but there is a script that keeps locking my computer at home and at work.

Got some more done all three of them. Had to move two of the cabosse steps as they where hitting the trucks. What is the best way to make it look like some wear on the plastic deck? I heard that sand paper and draging a razor saw across it works.

Bobster will email you after i wake up, at work right now.

Here is some pictures of them. Still work to go yet on them.

Updated 6/17/16 Fixed the deck not glued down all the way, and put some of the braces on the bulk head car. Sanded the decks some and painted the underframe on the one not yet painted. Put another coat of paint inside the caboose.

What i was going to use for the stake pockets is too small, so will have to get something else. What can i use to make the rivits on the two flat cars? was thinking the decal rivits from archer, but they are kinda pricey. Got the caboose painted, it is looking good.

Where would the brake wheel be on the flat cars, or would they have a lever instead? Cant find any good pictures that show it.

The transfer cabosse is done except for couplers. The two flat cars got archer rivits, now awaiting decals to be put on.

Fourt,

Enjoyed seeing your work.  Nice to see Rock Island represented here.  I may try my hand at a transfer caboose in N-scale.  I saw them frequently in Peoria.

Bobster out.
