Andy's wiring book and DCC

Can anyone who has Andy Sperandeo's wiring book tell me if it tells how to wire decoders into older/non dcc ready locomotices? If not can anyone recommend a good source for how to do this?

I checked with Andy on this, and he told me "My book doesn't cover decoder installations because I pretty much limited it to layout wiring. The best general guide for non-DCC-ready installations was in Keith Gutierrez's EasyDCC series in the April 1997 MR, page 80."

You can order a back issue from our customer service if it's in stock. We're also looking at reformating the article and publishing it on Trains.com in the near future.

Hi Alexander,

"Easy Model Railroad Wiring" – excuse me for quoting the full title –shows DCC decoder installations but only in a generic way, not related to specific models. That's in figure 8-8 on page 85 (second edition). The book is really focused on layout wiring.

For some specific examples of locomotive installations, see Part 3 of Keith Gutierrez's EasyDCC series in the April 1997 MODEL RAILROADER, pages 80-85, and Lionel Strang's Workin' on the Railroad column in the September 1999 MR, pages 109-113.

Back issues of MR are avaialble on the Train Shops section of this site, or from customerservice@kalmbach.com.

Good luck with your decoders,

Andy Sperandeo
