Two questions about a GG-1 model
Posted by Omaha53 on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 8:13 AM

I recently acquired an HO model of GG-1 without any box or paperwork. It runs very well but it is missing some small parts. With two electric motors  and it is weight it pulls very well.

The first question is, does anyone know who made this particular model? The only markings are on the bottom of the gear box cover where it says "Made in Slovenia". The bottom of the leading and trailing trucks look like Rivarossi photos I have seen but the Rivarossi photos I have seen only have one motor. The coupler levers look similar to those on an IHC steam locomotive that I have.

The second question is, does anyone know where to obtain some of the plastic insulators that go between the pantograph and the body? I highlighted one of them with a red oval in the photo.

Looks like you have a Mehano unit. They were produced in Slovenia, came with two motors and all wheel pickup. With some tweaking they can be smooth runners.

As for insulators you may have to either fabricte your own, or play the "get some off of scrap shells" game.

I scrapped a pile of old Bachmann Metroliners a while back to use as Alclad test shells. I saved the pantographs and insulators for "just in case" scenarios.  I've checked to see if the insulators are comparable so that I could mail you a few, but unfortunately they are much smaller and of a different shape than what's on your unit.

Hopefully one or more modelers on this forum may have a retired/scrapped IHC or Pemco GG1 shell that's collecting dust and may be willing to send you an insulator or two.

It probably made by Mehano for IHC. With a little searching, you could pick one up on eBay or at a RR fleamarket for a relatively low price to use it for parts.

Otherwise, you might be able to use parts from another manufacturer, perhaps even find replacement pantographs that are better than the originals.
