Finding other local model railroaders (upstate NY)

Hi all,

This is my first post here, I am trying to get back into this hobby after lapsing during my HS and college years. Right now I live in a small apartment, with no chance of building a layout of my own, so I'm hoping to find other hobbyists in my area, around Ithaca/Syracuse, NY.

Anyone on here from that area, or know of resources I could use to find other modelers in that area?

I'm pretty sure jpowell is in Syracuse. You can find him by clicking on 'members' on the top blue bar. Look him up using the search. Open his profile and find a recent post by him. If you go to that post you should be able to email him through trains.com by clicking on the email icon at the bottom of the page of his message.

There is a good hobby shop down in Horseheads, about 30 minutes from Ithaca, right in Hanover Square, they can be quite helpful. Isn't there a model rr club at Cornell i know they have a prototype club.

As Egmurphy stated, I live in East Syracuse. There are several clubs and LHS's in our area. One's in the Eastwood section of the city (Central Hobby Supply), one's in Liverpool (J&R Junction), one's in Baldwinsville (Bessemer's), and one in Lakeland (Walt's). There's a HO club that meets at the American Legion in Eastwood - down the street from Central Hobby - very helpful guys work there. They even have some, if not all of the layout that the club at the Am. Legion on display for customers to see, and for the guys to work on while there at the store. (I highly recommend a visit to this store). ThisThere's also a HO club that has a clubhouse in a old NYC depot in Elbridge between there and Skaneateles.
As for myself, I'm in the process of building a HO layout in my basement. I'll be posting pictures in the next few weeks, hopefully!

Thanks! I'll have to check those places out. Unfortunately Cornell has no Model Railroading club that I can find, though they do have a full-size RR historical society.

I'm coming back into the hobby a little lost I find. My first trains were 3 rail Lionel, then switched to HO for size and scale considerations. Now I see that scale O is popular too. Love the big size and sound of O... but $1K for a nice heavy steam engine is dizzy-ing. And I won't have the space for any layout, let alone an "O" sized layout anytime soon. Oh well, looks like I'll be running trains around in circles for a while yet.

Welcome back, your in the same boat as I am in.

Joining a club (or starting one of your own) is a good alternative, especially if you cannot and/or do not have space for a layout of your own.
