Pelle's stuff is good and he writes a lot for MR, true. That's because he shows a lot of how-to in his articles. If you want to see different articles, write one yourself. MR can only print things that people submit. Unless they're writing about their own projects, they'll print almost any well written project article...especially if it includes lots of crisp and clear pictures.

Since his new layout is set in the Midwest instead of the California desert, I an sure there will be a lot of new stuff.

There is a difference between having a nice layout and writing an artical acceptable for publication. There is a lot of back and forth between the author and the editor before the product is suitable for the magazine.

Before we call it "Pelle's World," I think we should give equal consideration to calling it "Cody's World"
Joe(inPA), I think you nailed it... I'm sure MR will gladly accept articles they can publish, but not everyone possesses the right combination of a visually appealing layout, excellent photography skills, excellent writing skills, and good modeling skills - Pelle is one of the few out there that does. My impression from reading his stuff is that he's also fairly down-to-earth and not full of himself. I'd put Lance Mindheim in the same general category, but his stuff seems fewer and further in-between in MR (at least recently). I personally love seeing articles by either one of them, but that's just one guy's opinion.
The fact that Pelle is currently named as a Contributing Editor in MR, probably means whatever deal that's been worked out between him and MR probably gives his articles a lot more exposure than if he was just a regular guy submitting articles. Not sure if being a CE means that you owe the magazine a certain number of articles per year, and if he has deadlines he has to meet with them. I'd assume that's the case, but can't say for sure.

One point I'd make about Pelle is that he often points out features of the modern scene that we don't see well covered elsewhere. He brought up conspicuity stripes on a well car, for instance, where these haven't been discussed in MR or other mags, as far as I'm aware.
In the 1980s and 90s, when MR seems to have been aiming at a different readership, several other mags (most now gone) covered the modern scene on items like COTS stencils, intermodal, etc. It would be great if MR, now seeming to refocus itself to some extent, could cover some of these things a little more clearly. Pelle and Cody would both be great people to help with this.
I really liked Pelle's piece on scratchbuilding the Monolith cement plant, by the way.

I've got no problems with all the Pelle articles, especially since he has effectively modeled an area of the Mojave Desert that I used to live near (Mojave, eh not Daneville) as a boy.
I've bought a couple of the Kalmbach books he's done too.
I guess the only thing I wish he would spend some time on was modeling the wind farms that surround Mojave, the Antelope Valley and the Tehachapi Mountains.
I think he's a very talented modeler. Personally, I don't care for UP and modern railroading so his stuff leaves me cold. I think having so many similar articles gets boring. On the other hand he puts out quality stuff very unlike what Cody uses to take up space in the magazine. His "fluff" articles just don't offer much except to add pages to each issue.

Being a bit more humble, I am grateful that we have a number of excellent author/modelers such as Pelle, Lance and that youngster named Cody. They may be a constant presence in the pages of MR (with Cody's being an obligitory one!), but they inspire others and that keeps the inspirational fires burning in those of use who are active hands on modelers.

I'm not terribly interested in modeling anything after, oh, about 1930 at the very latest- but I saw the cover and thought, "wow, that really looks like the NS main in Goshen, Indiana." Not perfectly like any given spot, mind you- but the atmosphere was amazingly reminiscent of a town and a railroad I know reasonably well.
Pelle models something I'm not intrinsically interested in - and it's an accomplishment to create a model that is still eye catching, even under those circumstances.

I like Pelle's work. His last cover photo is wonderful,check the depth of field, and the detail. I'm just jealous that a guy out of Norway can outmodel us. He has great powers of observation. If you want to look at a different era modeled check out Troels Kirks modeling. Also out of Norway. Good stuff.
note: I see that Pelle models with a nice shirt on and doesn't even use gloves even while working with plaster. Bill in Lewiston where its 105 today

I find his articles very interesting and would use bits and pieces of what he recommends. However, I would never have the time or willingness to carry things to the extreme that he does. For example, I have made roads from spackle compound in lieu of mixing two different consistencies of plaster. Use one maybe two coats of paint and some powdered pastels with good results.
