need a good color mix for painting rail
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 12:28 PM
I just moved and as a result my layout is packed up and broken down to where the track and ground cover is all that's on the benchwork. I figured it would be an ideal opportunity to do what I should have done to start with: paint the track.. Of course, I'll have to tear it up and then re-lay it afterwards. Problem is, how do you get a good color mix? What brand/colors/ratios should I use for a nice, weathered look? Also, is there a way to spray the ties and rails separate shades, or should I even worry about that? Oh yeah, it's all snap track and flex.
Thanks!

I use Floquil Roof Brown as the overall color for rail. In looking at prototype rail, I find this matches the color very well1

I just took a walk down to the tracks near my house ,which is metro-north commuter line.It seems that the dirt and dust color has a effect also on the rail color(as does the time of day & amount of sunlight) I mixed 3parts roof brown,1 part grimey black and 1 part rust of polly s acrylic. It dried to a perfect match when laid against the real rail, but did'nt look 'right' on my layout. It must be because of the lighting on the layout......So my advice would be to applly a color that looks right to you.

Floquil makes Rail Brown that might be the easiest way to go.

I've used this in the past but it looks to my eye as if it has a greenish cast to it.

Not sure yet what concoction I'll be using on the new layout.
