Depot Interior Colors
Posted by ALEX WARSHAL on Friday, March 20, 2015 10:46 PM

I am about to paint my Walthers Golden Valley Depot Kit, and I am going to base it off of a New York Central theme with light gray siding and dark gray trim. I was wondering what color I should paint the interior if any at all, because I will not light it. Also are there any good color photos of NYC depot interiors I can base my project on. Thanks in advance.

-Alex

Several of the NYC depots that I have been in were sheathed with tongue & groove beaded boards and they were stained a darker walnut color with varnish over that.

This was true weather it was a brick or wood outer structure. I can do more extensive research if needed. I'm sure there were some examples that had been painted in later years with the typical, institutional light green or gray.

Hope this helps, Ed

It's a lot easier to paint it now than it would be later.  If you ever decide to put lights inside, you will wish you'd done the painting while the kit was being assembled.

I've got an old Revell station that I recently restored and put on my layout.  I printed interior floors and walls, complete with wainscotting, on my computer.  I cut the printouts to shape and glued them inside.  This is a pretty easy thing to do.

I was going to go with more of an interior than that, with benches, figures and maybe even a pot-belly stove, but when I powered up the interior lights I realized that the interior would be barely visible through the small windows, so for now that's enough.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Sorry this is very late, but thank you to the guys who responded. I will stick with the basic outside colors, as my inside colors also. -Alex
