Good points, jwb1323;
I'm the guy who mentioned the 'technical' aspect under Paul Larson & Linn Westcott, and still believe it to a degree....if only that a lot of the 'technical' stuff was what we had to do ourselves, or go without...a lot of stuff not produced by the industry.
When Linn retired, and Russ Larson took over as editor, there were some pretty important changes, and the magazine became more things to more people,than ever, without losing the previous readership that wanted & needed articles like those of Gordie Odegard, (whose input transcended all editorial leanings.)
I'm maybe not a typical reader/subscriber...I always felt that MR pretty well reflected my developing interests progressively, from the 40's right through to the 80's...as the hobby developed & changed, so did I.After Linn left, I eagerly looked forward to the Odegard, Curren,Hediger,Sperandeo articles,and others too numerous to mention, and even the flurry of Olson & Furlow stuff, always lots to try. But by the early-mid 90's, my needs were no longer reflected by MR. The Strang & Koester stuff repulses me, the amount of redundant beginner stuff bores me, the Rivarossi ads for 40-year old X2f-Talgo toys gags me,the latest "Virtual" railroading stuff offends me.
I still subscribe,but more for nostalgic reasons than anything else...I can read all I want to read in MR in about 90 minutes.I can't see the value for money..the "special" pricing offers don't apply in Canada..our best price is USD$50./year + our tax. As my retirement income decreases in purchasing power, which is an ongoing problem, I expect MR will be one of the things I can no longer afford, based on value.
regards / Mike
