Railroad Model Craftsman Lives

Just got off the phone with White River and the new production of the magazine just went in the mail and they extended my subscription to make up for lost magazines.  So glad this has happened and this magazine is perfect to go along with MR.  I have been a subscriber for years to both mags and I love the scratch building articals on RMC.   Good Luck RMC.   Doug

My copy arrived yesterday.  I looks about the same.  According to the Editors Notebook commentary, they have upgraded the paper and have added some color.  Chris D'Amato is still the editor.  My copy is labeled July-October 2014, apparently to keep the cover date current.

And yes, it appears that the subscription expiration date has been extended to account for the missing months.

So how are the articles - any deviations from the norm of the last 6 months of Carstans ownership?
Are the various columns (particulary Scratch builders corner, and the nostalgia column Collector's ConsistQuestion) still around - how about the two page edu-torial that began the article section (can't recall the name right now), where the columnist writes a short essay about various prototype operations/equipment/practices/etc, and the other page has photos for illustration?

Yes, all of that was still there.  But this is the first issue back.  I don't know if most of this content was all ready to go when Carstens closed the doors.  Probably need to see what the next couple of issues contain.

Something I value about RMC are the excellent (in the true sense of the word) book reviews. No blubs here. Sometimes the better part of 2 pages. Not only is the critic comprehensive but "literary" and knowledgable about history. I hope the same people are doing the reviews via email if they haven't moved to the new headquarters.  With new RR books costing $65-85 dollars these days it's great to be 99% sure you want to buy it.

Hmm, I had forgotten about that, but now that you mention it I do recall at the "time of infinite crisis" (late August), that certain "people in the know" (there were a lot of them around then) stated that the July RMC was pretty much ready to go to the printer, but there were insufficent funds to get it printed and distributed.
OK, is there anything in the issue (beyond a "Welcome your new overlords" page) to indicate that any copy was written after, say June 2014?

RMC website says digital version will be uploaded soon.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

I have an article in the new issue (bet you can't guess which one!) and it was supposed to be in the July, 2014 issue--I have a proof that was sent me back in May, that has July, 2014 as the issue date on the article pages.  My guess is that this July-October issue is basically the July issue that never appeared.

Mr B & O

Probably the cement mixer article?  No, that's not my guess.  I'd guess the B&O coach article.

The Editors Notebook is titled "It's good to be back".  Obviously that was written after June.  Aside from that, I'm not sure how one would tell when a particular article were written.

I was thinking the product reviews and ad content - does anything look 4 months out of date? "Oh yeah, that's been out for a while already". For example, CMW might have the "We're into the 60s" ad with the grill of their new F100, as opposed to the later ad with the full image of the truck.

Maybe it's time for you to invest $5.95 and do your own investigatingSmile  I did scan through looking for some ads that said "offer good only in July", but didn't see any.

I probably will soon. Over the past few years, I found every other RMC had items of interest to me, while the inbetween issues generally didn't (this wasn't a hard or fast rule, but it did seem to work out that way). So I more or less ended up skipping every other month.
I brought the June issue, but I suppose enough time has past on the real world calendar that I can consider enough months skipped to buy this issue...
