I'm planning a layout set in the late '40s/early '50s depicting a portion of the L & N's "Hook and Eye", Atlanta Division in northwest GA that ran from Marietta, GA to Etowah, TN w/ a branch from Blue Ridge, GA to Murphy, NC. interchanging w/ the Southern's Murphy Branch (from Murphy, NC to Asheville, NC. This is known as the "Old Line" since it was overshadowed by a newer, much easier route that paralleled it also from Marietta to Etowah and onto Knoxville, TN and beyond. Taking some modeler's license, I'm depicting this route as a jointly owned (by the L&N and Southern), but independently operated shortline that had evolved into a heavily used bridge route, due to heavy traffic demands during WWII, from Asheville to Atlanta, relieving the strain on Southern's longer route thru Saluda grade in NC, thru SC to Atlanta, as well as an alternate route from Asheville to Knoxville via Blue Ridge and Etowah, for the Southern.
