Who has fire engines on their layouts?
Posted by aloco on Friday, October 29, 2004 2:28 AM
I recently purchased three Boley Spartan cab fire engines and I stick them on the model railroad club layout when I'm running trains. The trucks look like modern city fire engines, and they are among the few North American models available in HO scale. The club has its layout set up in a shopping mall, and some visitors notice the trucks right away.

I've also painted and detailed an HO scale fire hall for static display. It's the Life-Like Hampden fire house, and I painted everything on it to make it look like an authentic brick and stone structure. I made a driveway out of cardboard and stuck two yellow IHC Mack CF series trucks on it. The Mack trucks have been retouched (all chrome and aluminum parts painted, window glass and wipers installed, mirrors, and emergency lights). In the process I turned some cheap and cheesy looking models into something that looks quite realistic.

I probably will. I haven't decided how I will incorporate them in a scene because of the possibilities.

Our first completed town on our permanent layout has a firehouse with fire engines.

I was talking with my modular partner the other day on some modules we are building for a seperate HO layout. One of the modules will have a refinery on it and a fire house with fire engines would be a natural to place adjacent to the refinery. That is in the works.

I had read in Joe McMillans new Warbonnets and Bluebonnets book about the Santa Fe Tie Plant in Sommerville, TEXAS. This plant had its own fire department and would assist the local community during emergencies. My point is that large industrial areas might very likely have their own fire department.

I have 1 fire engine. Its was build with a Athearn Ford cab over chassis, and a home made bed to look like an actual one used in the era of my layout.

We have two scenes on the Cochise & Western Model Railroad Club's layout with fire engines -- a car wreck and an IRS building on fire. There are also fire stations, search and rescue, and ambulances scattered about.

I would like a fire engine on my layout, but since my layout is the '50's, I cannot find any that would be era appropriate.

Perhaps 15 years ago I built a couple of the Jordan Products fire trucks, a 1913 Ford and an Ahrens-Fox for an HO layout that never got built. I liked the detail of these little kits and were fun to build. This thread reminds me to include a small fire station on the HO switching layout I'm planning.

Here is my newest purchase. A $1.50 eKo truck from www.discounttrainsonline.com

It's the right vintage for me, but, as you can see, it needs a lot of work to look decent. But for $1.50, you can't go wrong...right? Excuse my poor photography, I was in a bit of a hurry:

I have a few fire trucks, construction trucks, various cars and trucks and suv's that I'm going to use on mine. Hey... it's like this... never know when that gas or water line might blow and you'll need the construction vehicles to dig up the road, or when that wayward freight comes barreling through town and a kid decided to 'throw' a switch and then....'crash' goes that train! Some of the construction equipment, along w/ most of the fire equipment will be heading to that scene.
Speaking of fire trucks/engines and trains, one of the towns out this way that covers 1/2 the CSX DeWitt NY Yard, is going to do a training evolution at the yard tomorrow w/ all of it's departments and some neighboring departments from the other town that has the other 1/2 of the yard in it!
If I'm free, I may go and watch it since I've been in and out of the volunteer service w/ 3 of those departments,!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017

Do I have fire engines on my layout??? Of course! [:D]

A train layout without fire engines is like a cop without a mustache!!! (Use to be one, still have one. I wil leave it up to you to decide which is which![;)])

I had a small L shape, 11x6, layout, with 2 fire stations. Currently planning an 11x13 around the walls, and will have at least 3 stations. Prototypical? NOPE. Do I care? NOPE!

Modelrailroader 71: For your era, Alloy Forms B61 models; the IMEX trucks would be plausible, especially for a volunteer department; and the Resin Unlimited 70th Anniversay Seagrave trucks.
