BLI announces Santa Fe 3751 and company in Black this time

Just out today on BLI web page, you will actually be able to buy the Santa Fe Northern in black, for all of us who purchased the engine in gray with black drivers.

I don't mind the first color as they weather nicely and most engines are not shiny except excursion and new locomotives.

Actually, I like the dark gray. All you have to do is weather the drivers a little, and it looks like it's REALLY been over the Arizona Divide or through the Tehachapi's.

You are right about the color and with some weathering; the first engine looks very good. The Santa Fe engines were always very dusty looking since their territory in the Southern California desert is a dusty and dry place. My normal weathering is to use grimy to accent the black and the first BLI SF Northern was almost the grimy color. Just needs the drivers and trucks touched up with grimy and sand to make them look good.

I noticed you live fairly close to my area also. I live in Auburn, having just moved back here from the LA area last month. Do you visit Bruce's or Railroad Hobbies?

Intresting. Yesterday I officially decided to repaint my 3751 black. I can't have a locomotive that makes me angry everytime I see it. And the fact that BLI is bringing out glossy black improved versions only makes me feel worse.

All the vintage footage and color photos I've seen of Santa Fe fat steamers have been ashy black (still darker than BLI) with soot and scale on some parts. A uniform light gray is NOT what a weathered steamer looks like. BLI has failed.

I wish I didn't pay $300 for a loco I have to repaint darker, but, "I gotta do what I gotta do son".

That's good news. I had wanted one but was always hesitant due to the fact they were that sick looking gray color.

I agree. That even light gray is really erking me. I weathered the drivers to be slightly lighter than the boiler, but the entire thing is still way too light. [sigh]
