Athearn SD-40-T2
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 11:07 AM
Anyone know if Athearn has permanently discontinued the SD-40-T2? And why? Surely the release of a SD-45-T-2 should not have effected the sales of the 40. At least let us have undecorated ones. Thanks for any information in this regard.

It hasn't been listed in the current Walthers catalog,so for now I am assuing that it is gone.I myself never had bothered to look closely at what Athearn was dropping,i just thought that what they would be making would be around for a while.Like most model railroad stuff, if enough people keep asking for the SD40T-2 model it might come back.Look at the Walthers Paper Mill Kit,it was gone then over 100 people aked for it,and it came back into production. I know that Athearn/Horizon models IS suppose to be at Trainfest in Milwaukee,Wi,this November 13 & 14, so if you want to ask anyone,it would be them...face to face.

I asked Athearn about this matter in September. On September 9, 2004 I received this reply "Please note that the SD40T-2 is not scheduled for production this year. We do not have any information regarding when it will next be produced at this time." Athearn's 86' Boxcars (along with other kits) were not produced nor listed in the Walthers catalog during the early 1990s. So, not being listed in the 2004 Walthers Catalog does not mean it is permenantly discontinued. In the mean time, I am buying as many SD40T-2s as I can.
