Thayne - Hamburg is one pretty city. Maybe not as picturesque as Munich, Heidelberg and the likes, but where else do you get a big lake with sailboats on it right in the middle of town. Of course, the harbor adds a lot of flavor as well. Yes, and there are some pretty gals around. What Hamburg does not have is mountains, and that so-called typical German oompah-band gemutlichkeit, which is, in fact, Bavarian only. Folks in Hamburg are pretty straight forward, but hearty, with an air of British  snobbery to them. Petra and I moved up north about 25 years ago, shortly after our son was born, and we have never regretted it.
