New And Need Some Advice

Im starting my first model railroad and need some advice. I want to use HO scale and my space is about 4x6 what would be a good track layout that could encorporate a mountain with a tunnel??

You could try a logging layout. Since your space is small, a logging layout would let you use tight curves and you could probably have more than one mountain and tunnel. I'm not sure if you want to limit yourself to only one industry, but it could be worth considering.

However, a logging layout would require a lot of scenery work, and since you're a beginner, it might overwhelm you a bit.

On the other hand, it wouldn't be difficult to incorporate a small mountain with a tunnel in a more conventional layout.

Thanx for the help and I will definitly consider this. Im more than willing to put in some extra effort on the scenry bit but you have to remember im only 15.

If you just want a simple mountain/tunnel, you can do that with pretty much any layout. All you have to do is cover a section of the track with a mountain, and there you go. Check out the layouts on www.atlasrr.com. They have a few that will fit into a 4x6 space, and that might give you some ideas. If you can get to a hobby shop, they might have the Atlas layout books available, which provide more detailed plans for the layouts on their website. Basically, you're looking at doing some form of a simple oval, or maybe a figure-8.

Here's a 4x6 that I just quickly made up.



It uses 18" radius curves and #4 turnouts. The line represents a mountain. There is enough room at the base of the mountain for a small town. There is also enough room in the back for some type of background building.

You could also try to design your own trackplan using the RTS software from www.atlasrr.com .
