I am looking for information on locomotives (Steam & Diesel) that would have ran the route between Fremont, NE and Chadron, NE during the late 40's and early 50's.

I tried doing a search on Google for sites with ALL the words : Fremont, Chadron, railroad, Chicago, north western and came up with > 100 hits. Not sure what exact information you need but looked like some pretty interesting sites.

BTW, wouldn't this RR run through the Sand Hills - one of my favorite parts of the world. That area has a quiet beauty that I miss whenever I'm not there.

Yes, the Nebraska Sandhills are my home country and I am thinking about modeling a N scale railroad matching my home town of Eli around the early 1950's period.

Here is some information from the book"The Chicago&North Western Cowboy Line".In the 1940's E class 4-6-2's,J class2-8-2's,4-6-0's and 2-8-0's.Passenger trains 13 and 14 were dieselized in 1951 with GP7's,later given an E7.Even though I live in Indiana I am a fan of the Cowboy Line.

Does the book "The Chicago & North Western Cowboy Line" cover a good history of this line with pictures and text? I guess what I'm trying to say is the book worth buying?

I don't think the book was worth buying,only 64 pages.one chapter on construction,one on Pine creek bridge,C&NW days at Long Pine,chapter on abandonment and conversion to a rail trail.Two other books which I don't have are:"Fremont,Elkhorn&Missouri Valley Railroad Company", by David Seidel,Harbor Mist Publications,1988.And"The High,Dry and Dusty"by Rick Mills and James Reisdorff,South Platte Press,1992.

Thanks for the information. From the book review it sounded like it was more about the conversion to a rail trail instead of a history of the line. I am a biker and support the "Cowboy Trail" for recreation all the way, but I am looking for rail history and a pictorial book.
