I use my fingers because I believe that gives me the greatest amount of control over how much ballast falls wherever. If your spoon is small enough and you can hold it steady, I'm sure that will work every bit as good. My main concern is to <i>avoid burying the track</i> - it's easier for me to keep stray 'stones' away from the inner rail sides, than it is to remove them (think about those styrofoam "peanuts" that are used in packaging - ever try to bru***hose off your clothing?[;)] )
