Poll to End Polls
Posted by Don Gibson on Friday, September 3, 2004 7:18 PM
I find POLLS - What's your favorite engine? - brand of track? - turnout? Etc.
amateurish. I'd like to see them ended. How about you?

MY favorite manufacturer or brand may not be yours. WHO CARES?

Model Railroader conduct;s a yearly poll among their readers. At least the results come from people willing to invest $39 yr., as opposed to computers owners with time on their hands..

What's next? Best computer? ISP? Redhead's VS Blond's?

I like brunets, myself. I think if someone thinks about and creates a good poll, they're O.K. Don't see them too often, though. Howver, in reality, I don't have control over, nor do I want to control what people put on this forum. Do your own thing! I likely won't participate.

End them now! most are overzealous poeple expounding about something they know little or nothing about and have not done homework on resulting in a lot of verbage about nothing. Waste of good bandwidth.

While they're not my favorite type of post, they don't particularly bother me. I don't see any reason to end them. I've figured out how to avoid wasting time on posts I'm not interested in, I simply don't open the thread.

But that's jmho. Your mileage may vary.

Seriously though, while there have been plenty of silly nonsensical polls, there have been a lot of good and interesting ones. We don't want to get rid of them, we just need people to use a little restraint. This is supposed to be fun. [swg]

Polls are fun. If you don't like one just skip it. I don't like them all, but then I don't like all the topics posted either. I just read the ones that interest me and skip the rest.
Enjoy

Redheads!!!
This forum, as with every related forum, should be about model railroading.
It should also be fun for all that are actively involved with it.
I myself find polls to be educational in the sense that someone could be doing something that I'm not & maybe I could try it.
If you don't like polls, don't bother with them.
It's also a way that we can learn something about each other.
It's interesting to know that Elliot uses 3 rail O scale etc etc etc.
Using polls as also told me that some people don't like polls.

But that's just my 2 cents

The polls should not end, but the originator of the poll should be required (after a certain amount of time) to write an essay on the findings and opinions of those who commented.
Then all the polls and findings should be posted somewhere so people who wi***o can review them to see if the poll they are about to post has been done or if they feel the results of a previous poll are outdated, then it can be redone with an explanation of why they think the previous poll results need updated.

Anyone want to post a poll to see what everyone thinks of the idea?

Whats so bad about polls? If you don't like them, skip over it. No ones forcing you to read them. [2c]

Redheads.

Polls can be fun. For those of you who don't think so, I'll tell you a little secret...

You know that [Poll] that shows up in some threads?

That means it is a POLL!! If you don't like 'em, don't click on 'em, OK??

Seems pretty darned simple to me!!

Brunets with long hair and brown eyes.[:D]
Don,Perhaps instead of trying to put a stopper to what most forum members seem to enjoy perhaps you should skip over them? I agree some doesn't make sense and those I skip..But,there are those that I find very interesting as I suppose the manufacturers does that looks in on the most popular forums.I suspect MR may be looking at the better poles as well. You see Don,that is feed back to a certain degree..

most polls, as you probably know mr. gibson, are started by kids, such as dougal, trainfreak, and so on. I'm a kid also, and while we have a vast amount of knowledge, we still like having fun finding out what other peoples preferences are, whether it be geeps or u-boats, or whatever. calling poll starters amaturish could discourage them from participating in this hobby.
And another point; it also seems that people that are "hardcore" dislike polls

Count me in for REDHEADS!!!!!

Personally, if you don't like or aren't in to polls then just skip them. They ARE identified as such so pass on them.

I would prefer if folks put in more thought to the question they are polling though. I mean it would be better than having the majority of the answers blasting the poller for not including something obvious. An example would be the favorite SD poll that forgot the SD-35....not a totally obscure engine. The polls just lose it when the answers get away from the original poll question.

Excellent point. I completely agree.

I suppose it would be redundant to point out the hypocrisy of this thread.

Keep 'em, we can always pass over them if they're not anything we're interested in. Myself, I have a lot of fun with some of them, and as a fairly 'newbie' to the forum, it's interesting to find out what other model railroaders think.
Oh, and I vote for Redheads. Especially if they're Austrian sopranos.

I like polls alot. If you don't like them, skip over them. It seems like anyone could figure that out. Now I may not know who NSYNC, Hillary Duff and all those other modern stars are ( I'm a Beach Boys fan myself [:D] ) but I do know that if the poll title is not somthing I am interested in, I dont click on it ! golly, is it hard to see ?

I think I'll start a poll on hair color preferences! [:D] From the looks of it, Blondes and Redheads would tie.

I post polls to find opinions to evaluate future purchases. Plus, I enjoy putting in my two cents worth. [2c]

I've also noticed that polls are a great ice breaker to start conversation threads and trade experiences.

Leave the polls! [soapbox]

Me, I got too much free time as it is. I just don't click on ones I don't like, but I enjoy most of them. They're alot of fun.

One irritation of these polls is they push other reasonable quesitons and notices farther down the message list and they may be overlooked.

Down with polls!

Gotta agree with Bob on this one. If they were polls that actually generated some worthwhile info or statistics it would be fine and even interesting but most of the polls are all but pointless. What's your favorite loco (with a very limited choice)? DCC or DC/DCC vs DC/Are you part of the DCC wave? (variations on a theme done at least twice a month). What steamer should be produced next (with 50 different answers from 50 people, mainly regarding obscure prototypes unlikely ever to be produced). Believe me, no manufacturer is waiting on the edge of their seat to see the results of these polls.

I'd much rather see, as someone up-stream already suggested, sensible/meaningful/useful polls offered by the MR staffers perhaps addressing MR's content, trends, or products and having posters responding with logical, thoughtful but no pie-in-the-sky, answers.

While I like the well thought out polls, I find that the majority are not. Most of them have flaws of omission of choices, whether it is about equipment, time period, or control. For instance some recent poll on RR's was 90% limited to eastern roads with no choices for midwest or western roads. Should also include 0- Other, and 0- None of the above.
