Seamonster Jeffrey: Now that's cheap gas at $3.54 a gallon. Our regular price for gas, which has been holding for quite some time, is $1.21/litre which works out to $4.58/U.S. gallon. We're holding our breath waiting for an increase due to the storm and the fire in Venezuela. They're predicting at least a 5 cents/litre increase some time soon.

Another beautiful late Summer day in WNY. I planned on running trains last night while doing the laundry, but I became wrapped up in a project that took up the time. Once the kids are back in school, the layout will be the main priority again.
Todd, The layout was originally planned to be a model of the B&O from Buffalo to Pittsburgh in the early 1950's when steam and diesel shared the rails. That would include the Railroads that interchanged with the B&O here, mainly Erie, Pennsy, NYC, and NKP. Well, as my sons got more involved with the project, each had their favorite railroad that ended up on our tracks. My oldest son loves Chessie, probably because his dad and grandpa were Chessie RRers, and my 13 year old has always liked the C&O as it appeared in the 50's. So, it's not uncommon to see a C&O Allegheny on the ready track next to Chessie GP 40's or a WM F7. I decided if it keeps them interested, what the heck! Here is a couple of John's C&O locos out on the main:

Went to town this morning to run some errands. Got to the pharmacy to drop my list off then to the auto parts store to pick up the caliper and brake pads. Boy, these pads are monsters compared to what went on my car! Caliper ain't no slouch either! Went to pull out for there and the left caliper seized. I got to a parking lot across the street and used a large bent screwdriver to push the caliper back. It locked again but had enough slack I could get home. Got home and checked both front hubs. Right was cool, as it should be. Left was hot. No question about it. Brake hoses look almost new. Went back to town later with my father as he had some errands to do. One was to go by the nursing home and check up on my mother. I was able to find a wheelchair that wasn't in use so that saved me a lot of pain. Went to Wal-Mart afterward to do the grocery shopping and get a new jack ($55. Old one has a busted seal) and pick up a few things for my father who was waiting in the car. From there to the pharmacy to pick up my meds. They missed two! I'll have to bring it to their attention the next time I go in. Told my nephew I got the parts and a new jack and I'd need his assistance ASAP. Now we'll see how long it takes him to get off his duff. I hope to have the van drivable by tomorrow. Saw in the news today that parts of Alexandria were flooded but should be open by now. In Leesville this morning we had a short but very heavy shower, seemed like maybe half an inch in just ten minutes! Fortunately it passed quickly and there were no further showers.

Chloe, I'll have the chicken BBQ, salt potatoes, cole slaw and a roll. Yes. the Cornell recipe type dinner.... Mmm, mmm, good! Nice glass of unsweetened ice tea would go along good too.
Got a whole lot of little things done today. Stopped over to the Boy Scout office in town and picked up my mail. been a while since I checked my mailbox I guess... had a whole bunch of announcements about activities from last April and May in there. Put about an inch and half worth of stuff into the recycling bin and kept the 4 or 5 sheets with current and future stuff I should be aware of... Then I stopped and filled up the car with with the pollution producing gunk that makes it go... Man, you guys weren't putting me on! The price has gone up a bit. Cost me $35.40 to fill her up ($3.94/gal.)! She was almost empty I guess. My gas mileage was only 39 MPG as well... Guess I am going to have to go back to using some hypermileing techniques... I also stopped and got some Fair traded, Organic Coffee beans down at the natural foods store. Huh? Dark Roast of course! Their coffee is fabulous, which is why I buy it there.
Most of this afternoon I have been adding electric drops from the rails in the new yard. About half way done with the job and then I will be running some trains to check it all out. I also need to get junk out of the way for when the Electric Installers show up on Tuesday...

Not been doingmuch lately. I came across an unfortunate side effect of the new paint stripper. It seems it caused some of my stewart F-units shells to crack after more than 10 minutes. It may be part of a reaction with residual reminants of the other stuff I tried though; as I left the DRGW F9A in for half an hor and it came out fine. Luckily the cracks were easily fixed on 2 of the 3 cracked shells. The F9A I got from jeff is gonna take more work as it's missing some bits of of the skirt around the fuel fills. I may be able to get it close with putty, but I think someone makes an aftermarket skirt for F-units though. If it fails, I could strip the 2 SP units I have for the project, but that will have to wait.
Sakel, It usually cost me between $45-55 to fill up my Mustang. It only has a 15.4 gallon tank, but I usually fill it when it's down to 1/4 tank. The reason why it's so much for mine is because I run premium. I can run regular, but it's really sluggish and sometimes studders on it. Mid-grade is a little better, but still sluggish. Even with a 3400 lbs. car with a 302 5.0 V8, and 3.73 gears, I can still get up to 24 mpg running around town; if I behave and don't have to deal with traffic. Of course when I mis-behave or race it the mileage drops down to 3 or 4 mpg. It should go up whenever I get my new engine (331 V8, a 302 5.0 stroked to a 331 5.4)
I'm planning to go to p-cola with my father tomorrow for a junkyard run. I don't need anything, so I'm just helping him and may get to to the an LHS on the way.
