A stop signal. Usually given in the context of an emergency stop.

That is when you swing your latern or hand in a quick back and forth motion at your knees.It means EMERGENCY! STOP!
In the 91/2 years I worked on the railrooads, I had to use that signal only once.That was when I was working on the PRR and a rookie brakeman step in front of the cars we was shoving..Sadly the rookie was ran over and killed before the engineer could get the train stop...[:(]
