4 X 8 LAYOUT RAFFLE
Posted by FRITSCHSR on Monday, August 23, 2004 11:27 PM
Hello,
I just wanted some input to a project that the club I belong to is going to try.
We built a 4 X 8 layout with structures and scenery that we are going to raffle
off at the county fair along with a Walthers train set. tickets will be $1.00 each.
We had a preview showing at the local antique tractor show and already paid
for a little over half the expenses and that was in 2 days, one being extremely
rainy. What do you think of this idea and was it ever done before?

I love the idea
our club tried that before (as they tell me, it occurred pre - ME), but then there were questions that arose re the club's non-profit registration vs. raffle. our club was advised that it might create more trouble (with the tax man?) than it was worth... (there may be different considerations where you reside). I don't know all the details, but our club has not repeated the idea

on the other hand, there may be a way to sell at cost or "donate" your raffle layout to the county fair event, and then let the event organizer deal with the tax / registration status implications as part of the bigger picture...everybody wins, the fair pays the club a token amount (to cover costs) or promotes your club / skills, then raffles your layout as part of their own promotions... club members could possibly volunteer to assist with the raffle at the fair, thereby putting the word out about THE WORLD's GREATEST HOBBY.

we have however given away a 4x8 sample club layout to a young lad that had a particular interest in the hobby
cheers

cheers, krump
