2 Truck Shay kit query
Posted by RowanB on Monday, August 16, 2004 3:01 PM
I recently purchased an HOn 3 - 2 Truck Shay Kit only to find that it seems to run on other than either N gauge or HO gauge scale track. Is there another scale track that this kit runs on? I've not seen any such scale track in Australia.
Alternatively, is there a kit available that would allow this kit to run on
HO or N scale track?[?]

HOn3 means it is a narrow gauge engine, where tracks are 3 feet apart. If it is a Roundhouse model, they also make one that runs on standard HO scale track, which is 5'-8-1/2" apart.

TT gauge track is in between HO and N scale, and might be what the MDC HOn3 kit is made to run on. TT is popular in Europe, especially Eastern European countries, so you will probably have to search the Internet to find track.

I would like to suggest that you contact MDC and see what they say about the track gauge. It might require special track that is custom made for narrow gauge modelers.

Thanks to both Bob and Charles, I think I will try to on-sell the model, as it would be quite a job to incorporate any TT track into my HO layout... currently measures about 18 scale kilometres.
Appreciate your comments, and also the links to your homepage/club layout.

Rowan,
If you wanted to have a branch line for logging or for a cane sugar plantation, you could buy some HO/HOn3 dual gauge track, some HOn3 track and a few switches. If you decide to keep the Shay for this purpose you should search the past threads here for discussions on fine tuning this kit - gears and universals from North West Short Line, etc.
